Villain wants to live as a commoner chapter 54

* * *

Baek Gunho was waiting outside the bathroom.

He helped me back to bed, ignoring my glare.

Going to the bathroom shouldn’t be this exhausting.

But this was all Baek Gunho’s fault.

“If you’re tired, rest.”

The cause of my exhaustion had the nerve to say that.

I gestured to the table with my chin instead of responding.

“Give me my phone.”

“Don’t look at stuff like that. Just sleep.”

“I woke up because of you, so hand it over.”

Baek Gunho eventually gave me my phone. I’d set it to silent since it had been ringing nonstop in the ambulance.

Now that I checked, I saw tons of messages from my coworkers.

There were messages from when they were worried, right in the middle of the chaos, and then ones asking if I was okay after things had calmed down.

Their concern warmed my heart.

The message I appreciated the most was the one telling me not to worry about work and just focus on resting.

That made me feel a lot better. I replied to each message, chatting with my coworkers for a while.

After that, I browsed the news. The dungeon break in the middle of Seoul had caused quite a stir.

[Dungeon Break in Gangnam… Emergency Evacuation Orders Issued]

[Dungeon Break in Gangnam Contained… Now Being Cleared]

The news was filled with stories about Na Hongju’s heroics.

I checked to see if there was any mention of me, but there were only a few articles referring to me as an F-rank Awakened who helped Na Hongju.

Even riding on Na Hongju’s fame, there should’ve been more mention of me.

Did someone block the articles?

I glanced at Baek Gunho, then searched more about today’s incident.

The internet was flooded with Na Hongju’s name.

It was a relief that I’d been overshadowed.

Feeling more at ease, I leaned back on the bed and started playing a game.

The background music caught Baek Gunho’s attention, and he looked at me like a parent watching their child waste time gaming at home.

I was in the middle of solving a puzzle when a knock came from the door.

“I’m here.”

The voice at the door was Kwon Sahyeok, sounding as if he had been invited.

“I told you not to come.”

“Go away.”

Baek Gunho and I spoke almost simultaneously. Ignoring us, the door opened.

“Hey there. I came to visit.”

Kwon Sahyeok stepped in, carrying a large bouquet of flowers.

He walked over and gently placed the flowers next to the fruit basket on the table.

Baek Gunho watched him with clear disapproval.

“What, you think you can just walk in wherever you want?”

“Am I somewhere I shouldn’t be?”

Kwon Sahyeok glanced at Baek Gunho, who was glaring at him.

The cold look in Kwon Sahyeok’s eyes was something I hadn’t seen before.

Seems like they hadn’t yet patched things up from their last fight.

It’s not like Baek Gunho is friendly with other hunters to begin with.

Kwon Sahyeok turned to me, a grin three times wider than usual, but it felt more ominous than anything.

“Aren’t you happy to see me, sweetheart?”

“Who said you could call him that?”

Baek Gunho reacted fiercely to Kwon Sahyeok’s nonsense.

He looked like he was ready to bite, but Kwon Sahyeok seemed to enjoy it, laughing.

“Your boyfriend’s so ferocious.”

“…”

I was at a loss for words.

It wasn’t the first time Kwon Sahyeok had spouted nonsense, so I wasn’t surprised.

But for him to talk about being my boyfriend in front of Baek Gunho, who was glaring at him like he was about to kill him?

This had to be a provocation, right?

Baek Gunho, clearly irritated, was unusually riled up.

Normally, he wasn’t one to get caught up in this kind of thing, but something about this really set him off, and his expression grew darker.

If I’d known it would come to this, I would’ve stopped it earlier.

Well, I did try to stop him, but Kwon Sahyeok never listens to anyone…

“Don’t say weird things. Who’s your boyfriend?”

“So, you’re not denying that you’re my ‘self’?”

“No, of course not! Stop talking nonsense.”

“Why so shy in front of your boyfriend? I don’t mind if the three of us hang out together.”

What is he even talking about?

Before I could say anything, Baek Gunho grabbed Kwon Sahyeok by the collar.

He looked like he was about to throw a punch any second, so I hurriedly stepped in to stop him.

“Hey, just ignore his nonsense.”

“Ignore it?”

Baek Gunho’s face contorted.

“This jerk is saying disgusting things about you.”

Was it that bad?

It was just nonsense.

Anyway, I couldn’t let them cause a scene in the hospital.

I quickly made up my mind.

“Let’s just kick him out.”

“You’re being too harsh, Heewon. Is it because your boyfriend’s keeping an eye on me?”

“You should be the one to stop. You’re doing this on purpose, right?”

“What do you mean?”

“You’re deliberately picking a fight.”

“I am interested in you, though.”

Kwon Sahyeok took another step closer to me, spouting more nonsense.

That’s when Baek Gunho drew his sword. He finally decided to escalate things.

“You want to go?”

Kwon Sahyeok smirked. A dark shadow started to spread from him.

“We’re in a hospital.”

I panicked and tried to stop them, but Baek Gunho didn’t seem to care.

“Perfect. If anything gets cut off, we’ll fix it right here.”

Baek Gunho said coldly, and Kwon Sahyeok chuckled.

“You think you can?”

“Easily. You’re nothing.”

The tension between the two of them was thick enough to cut with a knife.

I, caught in the middle, felt like I was going to faint from the absurdity of it all.

In the end, I stood up. Baek Gunho frowned and looked back at me.

“Don’t move.”

“How can I stay still when you’re doing this right in front of me?”

I reached for Baek Gunho’s sword, but before my hand could reach it, he sheathed it.

I signaled to Kwon Sahyeok with my eyes.

“You, put that away too.”

“…”

“Hurry.”

At my urging, Kwon Sahyeok calmly withdrew his shadow.

“That’s too much. I came all this way, and you’re just taking Baek Gunho’s side.”

“I stopped both of you.”

“You were ready to kick me out earlier. I’m hurt. I took time to come check on you.”

Kwon Sahyeok whined, trying to sound cute, which didn’t suit a grown man like him at all.

Despite the creepy attempt at cuteness, I felt a little guilty.

He had come to visit, only to get into a fight with Baek Gunho, get grabbed by the collar, and almost thrown out.

“Uh… I’m sorry. Thanks for checking up on me…”

I apologized, but Baek Gunho interrupted from beside me.

“He’s here to see Nahongju. Don’t mind him.”

“Ah, right, you’re both in the same guild.”

Both of them were part of the Samho Guild.

The guilt subsided a bit, but even if he was here to see Nahongju, he had still come to check on me.

“Anyway, thanks for coming.”

At my gratitude, Baek Gunho scowled while Kwon Sahyeok smiled brightly.

“Yeah. You’re really okay, right?”

“I did a full check-up, and there’s nothing wrong. I just need to rest.”

“That’s good to hear. Well, I’ll get going now.”

“Already?”

“You were about to kick me out. What do you mean?”

He had a point. Kwon Sahyeok waved and walked out of the hospital room, leaving one last jab at Baek Gunho as he did.

“Next time, let’s hang out without Baek Gunho.”

After provoking Baek Gunho one last time, Kwon Sahyeok left.

Baek Gunho, still glaring in the direction he had gone, quickly turned his anger elsewhere.

He stormed over to the table, grabbed the bouquet of flowers, and threw it in the trash.

“Hey, why’d you throw that out?”

“It’s bad luck.”

“Don’t say nonsense. The flowers did nothing wrong.”

“…”

“Do I have to get it out myself?”

As I started to stand up, Baek Gunho reluctantly retrieved the bouquet from the trash.

Thankfully, the trash was empty, so the flowers were still clean.

I put them back in their place.

Watching me do this, Baek Gunho suddenly pulled out his phone and made a call.

“Bring me some flowers.”

“What? What are you doing? Stop that!”

I had to stop him from ordering flowers in some bizarre competition.

After much effort, I managed to make him hang up. Baek Gunho glared at me, still angry.

“Don’t entertain that guy. The more you respond, the worse it gets.”

“Why do you hate him so much? You said he’s not that bad.”

“You’re not going to date him anyway.”

His voice was oddly certain, and I felt a weird sense of unease.

“I’m not, but…”

“But?”

Baek Gunho’s tone dropped menacingly, like he was ready to start lecturing me.

“No, do you have to date someone to be friends with them? You were the one who told me to be friendly. Sure, he says some weird things, but he doesn’t seem that bad.”

“You don’t get it. He’s trying to pull something.”

“No, he’s not.”

This relationship started with an ulterior motive, sure, but after seeing him often, we had become a bit closer.

Baek Gunho was reading too much into it.

“What if he is? What will you do then?”

“I’ll handle it.”

“Handle what?”

“I’ll either reject him or accept him. Does that answer your question?”

Baek Gunho’s eyebrows twitched in frustration.

“I’d rather…”

He muttered something under his breath. I waited for him to continue, but he didn’t.

It was strange for Baek Gunho, who usually spoke his mind, to leave something unsaid.

“What is it?”

“…”

I asked again, but he stayed silent, lips sealed.

Then, without another word, he turned back to work.

Since I couldn’t push him any further, I just fiddled with my phone.

Even while working, he seemed restless.

He would sigh heavily or pause, lost in thought.

Only when an older man came to visit did he settle down, but Baek Gunho’s strange behavior continued until I was discharged.

On the way home, he kept glaring at the bouquet I was holding with a murderous look in his eyes.

I had no idea what was going on.

When we arrived home, Baek Gunho followed me inside, still looking irritated.

“Hey, if you’re just going to sit there, why don’t you go home?”

“…”

He stared at me directly, lips twitching as if he had something to say.

I was tempted to grab him by the collar and shake it out of him.

This wasn’t like him at all.

“What is it? If you’re not going to talk, then leave.”

“Should we date?”

The words that came out were a complete bombshell.

I froze in place.
