OCMG chapter 47

But asking why he hadn’t used that method felt impossible.

Sensing Junhee’s hesitation, Daeheon replied as if he’d read his mind.

“Everyone has their reasons for not taking that path.”

What on earth could Taeryu’s reason be?

From the way he’d acted around Junhee so far, he seemed like someone who’d already had multiple partners, easily moving from one to the next.

Why did his words and actions always seem to contradict each other?

Junhee couldn’t help but wonder.

He wanted to ask, but felt he wouldn’t get a proper answer, so he posed a different question instead.

“…I always thought people with dominant traits didn’t have any worries.”

“That’s because they only show their good side, and they’re good at hiding the rest. It’s hard for ordinary people to even imagine what they go through every month. Honestly, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.”

Daeheon clicked his tongue and shook his head.

“Too much of anything is never good, as the saying goes. Excess can be just as bad as deficiency.”

Junhee had always felt lacking. He believed that the more you had, the happier you’d be.

But now he realized that some people found abundance burdensome.

And he never imagined Taeryu would be the one to show him that.

“Anyway, I should be heading out for work. Shall we leave together, Junhee?”

Daeheon glanced at his watch, preparing to leave.

“…Is it okay to just leave him like that?”

“He’ll probably snap out of it by the afternoon. What he needs now is time to endure, not me.”

Despite Daeheon’s reassurances, Junhee hesitated, unable to take a step forward.

“You can go ahead. I’ll stay a bit longer.”

“Alright. Oh, Junhee, let me see your hand.”

Thinking he was going to hand him something, Junhee extended his left hand, but Daeheon gestured to his right.

When Junhee obediently offered his right hand, Daeheon quickly removed the splint and replaced it with a fresh dressing and bandage.

“There. Be careful with your wrist, Junhee. I’ll leave my card, so call me if you need anything.”

“…Thank you.”

“No, I should be the one thanking you. You’re a lifesaver, after all.”

Junhee bowed as he followed him to the front door, and Daeheon left with a smile.

Junhee sighed as he searched through the minibar fridge.

“What does he even eat?”

He couldn’t possibly be surviving on air, like a mystical rabbit, yet there was nothing in the room except alcohol.

Junhee wasn’t much of a cook either, but this was a whole new level.

Bzzzz—

Closing the fridge, Junhee picked up the phone.

“Oh, Jin Siwon. Did you get home alright? Just woke up, huh?”

He had called earlier but assumed Siwon was still asleep when there was no answer.

A long sigh came from the other end of the line.

There was a pause, and no further response.

Junhee pulled the phone away to double-check the caller ID.

“Hello? Jin Siwon, is that you?”

-…Junhee hyung.

Junhee exhaled in relief at hearing Siwon’s voice, but he immediately noticed something was off.

Leaving the kitchen, Junhee stepped out onto the balcony, opening a window.

“What’s wrong? Did something happen? Sorry for leaving first yesterday. Did you get home safe? No trouble, right?”

-Hyung.

The way Siwon’s voice clung to him like a shadow filled Junhee with a sense of dread.

“What’s the matter, Siwon? What happened?”

The breeze scattered Junhee’s words into the air.

His heart pounded uncontrollably.

-Hyung… What do I do?

“It’s okay. Tell me what happened.”

Junhee gripped his phone tightly, trying to calm Siwon down.

Siwon’s labored breathing came through the speaker for a moment.

-Hyung, I messed up.

It felt as though Junhee’s heart had dropped into a bottomless pit.

He clenched his trembling hand and resolved to stay calm.

If he showed fear, Siwon would only become more distressed.

He had to stay composed no matter what.

“Siwon, it’s alright. I’ll fix it. Just tell me what happened, one step at a time.”

Despite Junhee’s soothing words, Siwon remained silent.

What kind of trouble had he gotten into that left him so terrified he couldn’t even speak?

Junhee’s anxiety spiked, his mind racing back to thoughts of Kang Hyesung’s golden spoon party and other troubling possibilities.

-Hyung, let’s talk later.

“Siwon, wait! Jin Siwon, don’t hang up. Say something to me, anything, okay? Are you home right now? I’ll come to you immediately. Just hang in there a bit longer…

-No. I’m not home, and I don’t think I can see you again. …Sorry, hyung.”

Click.

The call ended just like that.

Junhee called Siwon back immediately, but his phone was turned off.

He tried several more times before leaving a voice message.

“Jin Siwon, whatever trouble you’ve gotten yourself into, I’ll handle it. I’ll take care of everything, so don’t even think about doing anything rash, okay?”

Junhee paced anxiously around the balcony, clutching his phone.

Not home, and apologizing… What does he mean by saying we won’t see each other again?

‘If I call the Orphanage Director, she’ll definitely be worried.’

He carefully retraced the events of the previous day.

Eventually, he could think of only one person.

The one most likely to know where Siwon was now.

He made the call, but before the ringtone could sound twice:

-The person you are trying to reach is unavailable. Please try again later…

It wasn’t that the phone was off, nor had he been blocked—Siwon’s contact had deliberately declined the call.

Refusing to give up, Junhee left another message.

A few minutes later, he received a prompt reply.

[Moon Doyoung: He’s with me.]

Junhee’s phone slipped from his hand, clattering against the tiled floor.

Thunk. The ominous sound snapped him back to reality.

‘They’re still together at this hour? …From last night until now?’

Junhee, looking half-dazed, bent down to pick up his phone.

As he stretched his left hand out, someone suddenly snatched the phone away.

“…Director?”

Junhee hadn’t sensed his presence at all, but Ki Taeryu was standing there.

He quickly reached out to retrieve it, but Taeryu didn’t return it.

Instead, Taeryu stared intently at the cracked screen, an unreadable expression on his face.

“It’s broken.”

For some reason, he seemed to be smiling as he said that, which left Junhee feeling unsettled.

When Junhee frowned, Taeryu finally placed the phone in his palm, as if offering it back.

A crack had split the still-lit screen. It looked sharp enough to cut with the slightest touch.

Even though Taeryu wasn’t responsible for the damage, an inexplicable irritation welled up in Junhee.

“…This is my personal matter. Please don’t look at it without permission.”

Junhee practically snatched the phone back.

“Since it’s broken, just throw it away.”

“Whether I fix it or toss it, that’s for me to decide.”

“Whether it’s people or objects, isn’t it better to have new ones if you can?”

The way Taeryu’s gaze fixated on him, there was a sense that his words held an ulterior motive, but Junhee didn’t have the bandwidth to dwell on that.

Why was Siwon with Moon Doyoung? Was the trouble Siwon had mentioned somehow related to him?

Those thoughts kept circling endlessly in Junhee’s mind.

Siwon had turned off his phone, and Doyoung had rejected the call.

The anxiety was unbearable.

“Why don’t you just ignore it?”

“Director, how about you stop meddling in my business?”

“How can I when Assistant Yoo Junhee cares so much about me, yet tells me to butt out?”

Junhee was at a loss for words—not because he had none, but because the sheer absurdity left him speechless.

“When have I ever cared about you, Director?”

“You came running here so worried about me. Don’t you think that makes your words a bit unconvincing?”

He had momentarily forgotten.

This was Ki Taeryu’s hotel room.

Junhee, flustered, started to mumble excuses.

“The doctor begged me to come, so I had no choice but to check in on you.”

…It’s not like I wanted to come. He made sure to mutter that part softly.

“You could’ve refused.”

“What if something serious had happened?”

“That’s you worrying about me, Junhee.”

A large hand cupped his pale cheek.

As Taeryu murmured, “It’s cold,” the sensation of his words brushing against Junhee’s ear left his eardrums tingling.

No matter how many excuses he made, Taeryu would believe whatever he wanted.

“…I’ve confirmed you’re awake, so I’ll be going now.”

“Want me to fix it?”

When Junhee asked, “Fix what?”

Taeryu motioned toward the cracked phone.

“No need.”

“Not the phone.”

Those dark eyes stared down at him.

Until Junhee’s pupils reflected nothing but Taeryu, he couldn’t escape the intense gaze.

Realizing Taeryu meant the contents on the broken screen, Junhee pressed his lips together tightly.

Taeryu lightly brushed Junhee’s cheek with his thumb, pressing him.

“You’re worried about that big jerk right now, aren’t you?”
