Villain wants to live as a commoner chapter 41

* * *

“I’m Seo Heewon.”

I introduced myself to Moon Haeyoon, who was gazing at me with bright, eager eyes.

“Are you friends with Guild Master Baek Gunho?”

“Oh, yes.”

“Wow, I see…”

Moon Haeyoon widened her eyes in admiration. I had no idea what she found so impressive.

“Are you a hunter?”

“No, I just work at a company.”

“I see. That’s amazing.”

I couldn’t tell what she found so impressive. Her voice was so genuinely enthusiastic that it didn’t feel like a typical, polite response. She was incredibly responsive.

“How old are you?”

Moon Haeyoon suddenly asked, seemingly trying to learn more about me. I answered without hesitation.

“I’m twenty-six.”

“Oh, then you must be the same age as Guild Master Baek Gunho. I’m twenty-seven.”

As she spoke with a smile, Moon Haeyoon glanced outside. There was a strange flow of magical energy in the direction she was looking.

“Looks like the gate opened closer than I thought.”

Muttering to herself, Moon Haeyoon stood up. I moved closer to the open window beside her and saw hunters entering the gaping gate.

Not all the hunters went inside. Just as we could cross through the gate, monsters could also come through.

While it wasn’t like a dungeon break where monsters poured out continuously, monsters could still emerge from a regular gate, so Jung Eunji and a few other hunters were standing guard outside.

“It’s not a dungeon break, so it shouldn’t be much of a problem…”

Moon Haeyoon mumbled softly, activating a skill. A semi-transparent barrier appeared, enveloping the building.

It seemed Moon Haeyoon was a defense-type hunter who could create barriers.

“Don’t worry. My skill is quite strong.”

Though she said she wasn’t good in real combat, the barrier seemed sturdy, especially since she was a B-rank hunter.

It wouldn’t be easy for most monsters to break through.

“That’s reassuring. Thank you.”

“It’s nothing, just doing my job.”

Even my light, polite thanks seemed to make Moon Haeyoon genuinely happy.

With enthusiasm, she turned her attention fully to me.

“What brings you to the guild at this hour?”

“I got a call while Baek Gunho was giving me a ride home, so I ended up coming along.”

“Oh, so you’re here because of our guild master…”

Moon Haeyoon smiled apologetically.

“I’m sorry you got caught up in this.”

“No, it’s Baek Gunho’s fault for bringing me here.”

For some reason, my offhand comment made Moon Haeyoon burst into laughter.

“By the way, you seem to know this guild pretty well. You found the break room right away.”

“Yes, I’m familiar with it. Come to think of it, have you been to the break room before?”

“I followed you here. It looked like you were heading to take shelter.”

Moon Haeyoon smiled warmly.

What followed was a casual conversation about trivial topics, led by Moon Haeyoon’s friendly approach.

Thanks to her, I found myself talking easily about my life. Moon Haeyoon also shared quite a bit about herself.

I learned that she had moved out of her parents’ house and lived near mine, that she majored in Korean literature in college, had been with the Pasa Guild for about six months, and that she didn’t currently have a boyfriend.

I also ended up exchanging phone numbers with her.

As we continued chatting, the commotion outside gradually died down.

Just as we were enjoying our conversation, Moon Haeyoon’s phone rang loudly. She checked it and sighed, turning to me.

“It looks like I have to go.”

“Oh, alright. Take care.”

“I’ll contact you later.”

With a wink, Moon Haeyoon swiftly left the break room before I could even respond.

‘It’s not just my imagination, right?’

She asked if I had a girlfriend, so it seemed like Moon Haeyoon was interested in me.

As I sat alone, idly fiddling with my phone, there was a stir near the window.

The gate was closing, signaling that Baek Gunho and Oh Mingyu had successfully cleared the dungeon.

As the evacuation ended, the employees who had been holed up in the break room began to leave one by one.

I also got ready to go and headed outside. On my way out, I ran into Baek Gunho coming back in.

Even though he had just been fighting monsters in the dungeon, Baek Gunho looked as clean as if he had just been on a stroll.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Good. Then I’ll be off.”

“Wait a bit longer.”

“I’ve already waited an hour.”

“That was evacuation. Now wait.”

Baek Gunho spoke as if he was training a dog with food in front of it. This annoying bastard.

I considered just ignoring him and leaving, but then I saw Oh Mingyu approaching.

Unlike Baek Gunho, who looked the same as usual, Oh Mingyu seemed in a foul mood.

Rather than getting into a petty argument in front of a rival guild master, I decided to let it slide this time.

“I’m nice, so I’ll wait.”

“Yes, you’re very nice.”

The way Baek Gunho praised me like a well-behaved child made me regret my generous decision.

But I was broad-minded, so I decided to wait.

About thirty minutes later, Oh Mingyu, who had gone up to the guild master’s office with Baek Gunho, came down to the first floor.

He crossed the lobby with a face full of irritation before suddenly stopping to look back at me.

I was watching, so our eyes met instantly.

Oh Mingyu’s glare was fierce enough to intimidate an ordinary F-rank into submission.

I wasn’t bothered, but I pretended to be scared and looked away.

Only then did Oh Mingyu seem satisfied as he averted his gaze and left the guild.

‘What a childish guy.’

Not that I couldn’t understand. Baek Gunho probably pissed him off by deliberately provoking him.

Although the way they vented their anger was ridiculously childish, I could understand the sentiment.

Soon, Baek Gunho also came down to the first floor. I cleaned up the empty cup and left the café.

“Did everything go well?”

“Yeah.”

Baek Gunho replied calmly, showing no trace of the anger that had been evident in Oh Min-kyu.

Yeah, it’s better to bite anyone than to get hit. No matter how annoying it was, I was on Baek Gunho’s side.

As long as it ended well, that was enough.

“Where were you when we had to evacuate?”

Baek Gunho asked as he drove. I glanced at his profile and answered.

“The break room.”

“You could’ve waited in the Guildmaster’s office.”

I didn’t respond. Being alone in the Guildmaster’s office made me too conscious that this was Baek Gunho’s daily workspace. Even though I was already comfortable at his house as if it were my own.

“Nothing troublesome happened, right?”

“No. I just had a chat with Hunter Moon Haeyoon.”

“Moon Haeyoon?”

Baek Gunho’s expression grew serious. After a moment of thought, he spoke earnestly.

“Moon Haeyoon’s not suitable.”

“For what?”

“Not a good match for you.”

“…Why?”

It’s not like I was thinking of that, but wasn’t she someone he wanted to recruit?

It wasn’t like Baek Gunho, who usually wanted to pair me up with good people.

Could it be that she didn’t have good intentions when approaching me?

“Is she a bad person?”

“No, it’s not that.”

Baek Gunho firmly denied it. I looked at him, puzzled, unable to understand why he was against it.

“Then what doesn’t match?”

“Did you like Moon Haeyoon?”

I thought she left a good first impression, but not in the way Baek Gunho meant.

But if I answered honestly, he’d just shut me down with a “then you don’t need to know,” and wouldn’t explain.

“Why do you think that?”

“Ha…”

Baek Gunho just sighed deeply instead of answering. Seeing his ambiguous attitude, a new suspicion arose.

“…Or do you like Hunter Moon Haeyoon?”

Now that I think about it, he did go out of his way to speak to Moon Haeyoon even though he needed to hurry and deal with the gate.

It wasn’t like him to care whether someone went to the gate or ran away.

Could it be that he actually likes her? The suspicion started to grow.

“What? No.”

“…”

“That’s impossible.”

Baek Gunho denied it sternly. Though, now that I’d started doubting, even his attitude seemed suspicious.

But Moon Haeyoon… It seemed like she was interested in me.

“…”

If Baek Gunho really liked Moon Haeyoon, it would be a messy love triangle.

“What on earth are you imagining?”

Baek Gunho snapped as he saw my pale face. I shook my head weakly.

“No, I just… support you.”

“I’m telling you, it’s not like that.”

“Yeah, okay…”

I replied half-heartedly, letting his words go in one ear and out the other.

My mind was in turmoil. I didn’t think I’d be able to fall asleep easily tonight.
