William gave Henry a look as if to say things weren’t going to be that simple.
“Do you have something to say?”
“It’s not that I have anything to say, but…”
William trailed off, waiting as if anticipating something.
As time went on and Henry was about to ask what was wrong, a new figure entered the dining room.
“Your Highness.”
Henry turned to see a man approaching with a light tread.
Kayla exchanged a glance with Crown Prince William before turning his attention to Henry.
Despite their eyes meeting, Henry didn’t think to greet him and simply stared.
Perhaps it was because he had seen Kayla with Edwin.
As Henry stared blankly at Kayla, Crown Prince William seemed to interject.
“I called him. You saved Kayla, didn’t you?”
“Yes, but…”
“Kayla asked me to arrange a meeting. I suppose I should take my leave now.”
With that, William got up without any hesitation, as if he had fulfilled his duties.
He had a lot of interest in Henry, but for now, his focus shifted to the red cat trying to escape from his room.
“Have a good conversation.”
As William left with a light step, Henry found himself awkwardly facing Kayla.
He knew he needed to speak, but his mouth wouldn’t open easily.
Seeing this, Kayla took the initiative.
“Shall we have a brief conversation?”
With Kayla’s gentle suggestion, Henry nodded slightly, lowering his eyes.
Even after moving to a different place, there was no substantial conversation between Kayla and Henry.
Kayla couldn’t easily start a conversation because he felt uneasy about the fact that Henry had nearly died saving him, and Henry was put off by seeing his with Edwin.
In reality, when Edwin didn’t show up for dinner, it led Kayla to believe that he was with her.
But since Kayla appeared alone, it meant he had been separated from Edwin, which made Henry curious about when exactly they had parted ways.
‘It’s not my concern.’
It was a matter strictly between the two of them.
Yet, Henry found himself preoccupied with it to the point where he couldn’t even bring himself to speak properly.
“Henry.”
Once again, it was Kayla who spoke first. Henry looked up and met Kayla’s eyes, only to be slightly taken aback.
His gaze was clouded with many emotions—gratitude, remorse, guilt, and relief—all mingled together, giving his usually clear eyes a layer of veiled complexity.
“Thank you for saving me. I never expected that it would be you, of all people, to come to my rescue.”
“Well, it’s just that my body moved on its own…”
Henry couldn’t accept Kayla’s thanks easily.
Although he had risked his life, it wasn’t purely out of a sincere feeling towards him, which made him uncomfortable.
Kayla gave a faint smile at Henry’s response.
“If something had happened to you, I would have had to live with the guilt for the rest of my life. I would never forget the person who saved me twice.”
“Twice?”
Henry asked, sensing something odd in his words.
He had only saved Kayla once.
So where was this notion of two times coming from?
“I knew you wouldn’t remember, but it’s a bit disappointing having to confirm it.”
Henry was even more confused by Kayla’s voice full of lingering regret.
Had the protagonist and the antagonist had a past connection before?
“We met when we were children. Even back then, you saved me.”
“I’m sorry, but could you explain a bit more?”
Since it was already clear he didn’t know, Henry decided to be straightforward rather than pretending otherwise.
At his question, Kayla’s expression turned wistful as he recalled old memories.
“When I was about ten, I went to the Empire.”
Even though Kayla was a prince of a small country, it was important for the king to maintain connections with the Imperial family.
Since he was close in age to the Crown Prince, it was hoped they would get along well.
“I was really surprised by the size of the Imperial Palace when I first saw it. And while I was lost in admiration, I ended up getting lost.”
Kayla began recounting his experiences with calmness and a sense of nostalgia before meeting Henry.
“I tried to stop anyone passing by immediately and ask, but the opportunity didn’t come easily. There were no people around, and the only person I encountered—a boy—ignored me and walked away.”
He was a boy with black hair, and hearing Kayla’s trailing words vaguely reminded him of Edwin.
Somehow, the boy in the story seemed like Edwin.
If anyone was likely to be indifferent to others while moving in and out of the palace, it would be Edwin.
“So, I decided to climb the tree.”
“Huh?”
The flow of the story didn’t match up.
At Henry’s reaction, Kayla laughed aloud and then shared his thoughts.
“I thought I might find the way from up there. Of course, I realized it was a misguided idea. That’s where we met.”
“…On the tree?”
Even though he didn’t know Henry’s childhood, he didn’t seem like the type who would climb trees. When Henry asked with suspicion, Kayla shook his head.
“I fell from the tree and you caught me, then fainted. It was you, Henry.”
“I caught you?”
“Hmm… I was just there, and I did fall.”
As Henry quietly processed Kayla’s innocent story, he realized that the pure and lively prince had climbed a tree and fallen, only to be crushed by the villain.
It was clear from the beginning that their first encounter was destined to be a bad omen.
“Is that all?”
“No. When I came to my senses, you accepted my thanks and showed me around the palace. We spent a few days together. And…”
Kayla’s face turned red, which made Henry even more confused.
Why was he acting like this?
“You said I looked like a doll and that you’d never forget my pretty hair and face. We had a great time.”
Seeing Kayla’s slightly hurt tone, Henry simply remained silent.
Sometimes, keeping quiet was the best option.
He felt ashamed for trying to push away Kayla, who had consistently shown him affection.
It seemed foolish to hold a grudge against such a pure and cheerful person.
Kayla had always been lovable. his unique purity dulled Edwin’s sharp edges and won his heart.
Yet now, just seeing Edwin and Kayla together made Henry feel like a villain and caused him to sulk.
Acknowledging everything, his heart settled, and he could look at Kayla again.
The focus shifted to the fact that they had a connection.
Since Kayla was happy to see him, wasn’t it good to become close with her?
Besides, Kayla had already shown him boundless affection, saying he was grateful for being saved.
Henry, having sorted out his thoughts, gave a somewhat pretty smile.
Kayla’s eyes widened at the sudden smile from someone who had just been lost in complex thoughts.
“I’m sorry I forgot. But I imagine you must have been really pretty like a doll when you were younger. Maybe that’s why I didn’t say something like that?”
Even now, he was a beautiful person.
Not because of his feminine appearance, but with gentle lines and a smile that seemed drawn.
At Henry’s compliment, Kayla smiled shyly, then quickly hid his smile.
Trying to force a look that was obviously contrived, Kayla spoke in a slightly hurt tone.
“Is that all?”
Kayla encouraged Henry, expecting more words.
As Henry hesitated, his lips twitching but no words coming out, Kayla eventually burst into laughter.
As he listened quietly to Kayla’s clear laughter, Henry glanced sideways.
In the bright midday sunlight, he suddenly felt that Kayla had an aura that radiated a vibrant life in the sunlight.
‘What about me?’
Caught in his own thoughts, Henry looked at his reflection faintly seen in the window.
Though he had bright hair like Kayla, his aura was completely different.
He felt he could never exude such a fresh atmosphere.
“I’m sorry for just laughing.”
Kayla clenched his fist to cover his mouth, trying to suppress his laughter.
Once he felt somewhat satisfied, Kayla extended his hand toward Henry.
“Well, in times like this, we should become friends.”
“Friends… I’d like that.”
As Henry took Kayla’s hand, Kayla’s lips gently parted, revealing a neat smile.
