As he was mulling over it, his phone rang.
It was a text from Dowon’s mother, Park Kyungsook.
[Park Kyungsook: Secretary Ha, are you still not in touch with our Dowon?]
Why was she asking him about Cha Dowon’s whereabouts?
Though it didn’t make sense, Wonjin adjusted his glasses and began typing out a diligent reply.
[No, he changed his number, and he’s moved, so it’s difficult to reach him.]
Just as he was about to send the message, he paused.
He’d been debating whether to go see Dowon or not, but now he had the perfect excuse.
He quickly rewrote the reply.
[I’ll try to arrange a meeting.]
[Park Kyungsook: I knew I could count on you, Secretary Ha. Please do.]
With a justifiable reason now in hand, Wonjin searched how to get to Dowon’s shop.
It was an hour’s drive away.
If he was going to meet him, he might as well clear up this lingering awkwardness.
Wonjin resolved that this meeting would mark the end of his relationship with Dowon.
Thanks to the one viral photo posted by Natsuyama Soseki, Yeongdeok’s chicken shop was now overflowing with customers.
Although Yeongdeok was enjoying the daily rush of work, running the shop alone meant he was constantly short on help.
Maybe he should hire someone useful.
Someone strong.
As Yeongdeok closed up the shop at 2 a.m., these thoughts crossed his mind.
While locking the door, he noticed someone approach.
He assumed it was a clueless customer who didn’t know the store was closed.
“We’re already cl—”
“Director Cha….”
Hearing the familiar voice, Yeongdeok stopped mid-sentence.
Last time, he had asked not to be called “Director Cha.”
His expression hardened as he turned to face Wonjin before resuming his walk.
“No, I mean… Mr. Dowon?”
Realizing his mistake, Wonjin nervously trailed after him.
Yeongdeok let out a long sigh.
“Come to think of it, I never told you. My name’s no longer Cha Dowon. It’s now Cha Yeongdeok. I changed it.”
“Huh? Cha Yeongdeok?”
Wonjin was at a loss for words.
Cha Yeongdeok? That strangely familiar name… like Yeongdeok crab?
“So, should I call you Mr. Yeongdeok…?”
“No. I’d rather you didn’t talk to me at all.”
A cold wind blew from Yeongdeok, and to be fair, the weather was freezing—it was December, after all.
Looks like he really is mad at me.
But why? Wonjin, determined to calm him down, switched topics.
“Do you always wear a suit when you’re running your shop?”
“…”
“Most chicken shop owners don’t wear suits while working.”
Fearing that Yeongdeok might get even colder, Wonjin trailed off awkwardly.
Yeongdeok, hearing yet another comment on his outfit, felt something was wrong.
Wasn’t it normal to wear a suit to work?
Without realizing it, he had been acting like an obsessive boss character.
That wouldn’t do.
“Is that so? Then what do most people wear when they run a chicken shop?”
“Uh…”
Noticing Yeongdeok finally show interest in a topic, Wonjin saw his chance.
“I can help you pick out clothes!”
Wonjin’s enthusiastic voice echoed through the quiet night, and Yeongdeok blinked rapidly at his sudden burst of energy.
“You?”
“Yes! Are you free this weekend?”
Although he had the time, Yeongdeok didn’t feel like spending it on Wonjin.
But still…
Yeongdeok recalled the detestable sight of PetitRolang’s back as he sat in front of the monitor.
Even if he didn’t really want to, letting a character with the “obsessive” trait go on a casual shopping trip with a love interest was bound to ruin the novel.
“I have the time.”
“Are you sure… Yeongdeok?”
“Yes.”
Having resolved to meet Wonjin, Yeongdeok unilaterally set the date and time.
“Be in front of this store by 1 p.m. on Saturday.”
“Understood. I’ll be there.”
Wonjin nodded without objection, repeatedly affirming Yeongdeok’s words.
“If that’s all you wanted to say, shouldn’t you be on your way now?”
Frowning, Yeongdeok glanced at the clock, which showed it was past 2 a.m.
To think he’d come at this hour—he hadn’t noticed before, but he was just as rude as that Seo Jihoon guy.
“Yes. Please make sure you keep your promise.”
“Have I ever broken one? Now go on.”
Only after confirming several times did Wonjin finally leave.
Yeongdeok watched his retreating figure before heading towards where his truck was parked.
ꔚ
Time passed, and it was now the Saturday Yeongdeok had agreed upon with Wonjin.
Dressed in a gray hoodie with a character that seemed straight out of a horror game and camo pants, Yeongdeok left his house and drove the truck to the store.
Through the window, he saw Wonjin and honked the horn.
Startled by the sound, Wonjin looked up at the truck.
Yeongdeok leaned slightly out of the window and called to him.
“Ha Wonjin.”
“Cha Manager… no, Do… no, Yeongdeok.”
How many times was he going to get it wrong?
Letting out a faint sigh, Yeongdeok pointed to the passenger seat with his thumb.
“I didn’t know where we’d be going, so I brought the truck. Get in.”
“The truck? It’ll be uncomfortable to drive in the city. I’ve brought my own car, so—”
“Get in.”
Without further explanation, Yeongdeok pointed to the passenger seat again.
Hesitating, Wonjin finally climbed in obediently.
Never in his life did he think he’d ride in a truck driven by Cha Yeongdeok.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Wonjin couldn’t shake the uncomfortable feeling crawling all over his body.
“Um, maybe I should drive after all.”
“Why don’t you buckle your seatbelt instead of wasting time talking?”
When Yeongdeok reached for his seatbelt, a startled Wonjin quickly fastened it himself.
“So, where are we heading?”
Originally, Wonjin had planned to go to a luxury department store, but remembering Yeongdeok’s eccentric behavior, he shook his head.
“Let’s just go to a nearby shopping mall. The stores are all in one place, so it’ll be more convenient to look around.”
“Alright.”
After inputting the destination into the navigation, Yeongdeok shifted the gear from neutral to drive and pressed down on the accelerator.
The truck rattled forward.
As Yeongdeok drove, an awkward silence filled the car.
Just as Wonjin was agonizing over what to say, Yeongdeok spoke first.
“How’ve you been?”
Surprised that Yeongdeok initiated the conversation, Wonjin quickly responded.
“Oh, I’ve been—”
At that moment, the steering wheel jerked sharply to the side, and Wonjin was thrown against the door.
His bangs flew into his eyes, stinging them.
Why was he changing lanes so recklessly?
As Wonjin turned pale and panicked, a mid-sized car pulled up next to the truck.
The window rolled down, and a middle finger shot out.
“Hey, truck bastard! Drive straight!”
“I am driving straight, you sure have a lot to say.”
Yeongdeok’s brow furrowed slightly, muttering shamelessly as if he hadn’t done anything wrong.
Witnessing this arrogant attitude, Wonjin instinctively felt a sense of dread.
“M-Mr. Cha… I really think I should drive—”
As Wonjin reached for the steering wheel, the blinker flipped up, and the truck swerved into the next lane, sending his body slamming in the opposite direction.
The car behind them honked furiously.
“Hey, you crazy bastard! Can’t you drive properly?!”
Gripping the handle above the door for dear life, Wonjin glanced nervously at Yeongdeok.
Is he trying to take me to the afterlife with him in this truck?
As his survival instincts kicked in, Yeongdeok, unfazed, calmly followed the navigation instructions and pressed the accelerator.
“It says to make a U-turn here.”
“Director Cha, please slow down before you—”
Wonjin practically begged, but his desperate plea didn’t reach Yeongdeok.
Without reducing speed, he spun the steering wheel.
The view outside the window spun twice around.
The only time Wonjin had experienced something like this was during childhood bumper car rides.
The truck twirled like a figure skater and shot forward again.
With his mouth hanging open, Wonjin felt as if his soul was escaping his body.
Unaware of Wonjin’s turmoil, Yeongdeok smirked, feeling a strange thrill.
Watching him smile, Wonjin thought once again that Yeongdeok resembled a psychopath.
Who in the world gave this man a driver’s license? He was dying to meet the examiner.
