Quietly Hiding that I am a Man chapter 111- Fake Jeanne

* * *

In the early hours of dawn, a magic circle was engraved on the backs of both my hands—a sign that I had become Jerome’s contract-bound soul partner, and evidence that a new sacred ritual had successfully been etched upon him.

This allowed Jerome to withstand Mephisto’s negative influence, even if only temporarily.

“Though this is little more than a stopgap measure…”

I forced open my swollen eyes.

The long night had finally passed, with a faint light filtering through the window’s gap.

Carefully, I removed Jerome’s arm, which was wrapped tightly around my waist.

The lingering traces on my body, like blooming red marks, told the story of the previous night’s events.

“At least this time, it was less painful.”

Watching Jerome’s sleeping face, I reached out.

He looked far more at peace than when he’d been tormented by Mephisto.

As I rubbed my sore wrist, I recalled something Jerome had said last night.

“A child raised by Jeanne would never stray.”

Startled, I jumped out of bed and hurriedly gathered my clothes.

My heart pounded uncomfortably.

Clutching my aching waist, I made my way out of the room.

Ber, who had been asleep curled up at the door, looked up.

“You succeeded! As expected of my master!”

“…”

“Oh, but why the long face?”

I found it hard to answer Ber’s question.

I’d obtained Maya’s stone and curbed Jerome’s rampage.

Everything was resolved, yet one memory from the past kept nagging at me.

“Luke is cunning. He knows how to exploit people’s desire for recognition. Don’t let him deceive you, even if I’m not around. Got it?”

The closer I grew to Jerome, the more I overthought every little word and gesture.

Maybe he had meant nothing by it, knowing his personality, but I couldn’t ignore the possibility.

Ber climbed up my arm, purring softly, as I whispered a question.

“Ber, has there ever been anyone else who sealed Mephisto within themselves like Jerome?”

“Yes! There was.”

“What happens to a contract partner if Mephisto is destroyed?”

“Well… I don’t know. No one has ever destroyed Mephisto. Even if the host dies, Mephisto always revives.”

Mephisto had never been destroyed, so no one knew what would happen to the contract partner.

I clutched the pocket watch around my neck, deep in thought.

“Jerome assured me it wouldn’t come to that, but in the end, it’s a fifty-fifty chance—either he’ll survive or he won’t.”

I glanced at the hesitant face staring back from the mirror in the inn hallway.

In the end, I was the one who had to perform Maya’s miracle after collecting all the stones.

If Jerome’s death were essential for Mephisto’s destruction, I would become the one to kill him.

I lowered my head, feeling a mixture of emotions.

“If saving the world means Jerome must die… could I really kill him?”

I, who despised the idea of sacrificing for the greater good, might have to force that very fate upon Jerome.

It was the worst sort of tragedy.

As I wrestled with this thought, I suddenly felt something trickling down from my waist.

Ber sniffed, noticing my pale face.

“This smell… could it be? Did Jerome find out you’re a man?”

I quickly clamped my hand over Ber’s mouth, stopping his shocked outburst.

Sometimes, he seemed to forget that I was hiding my true gender.

After releasing him, I sighed.

“It seems so.”

“What will you do now?”

“I’m not sure. He doesn’t seem to pay attention even when I tell him.”

I went back to the lobby, rented another room, and returned with the key.

I locked myself in the dim room and thought deeply.

“I mean, normally, if someone found out you’re a man, they’d be shocked or angry that you’d deceived them. Who would react like this?”

The only saving grace was that Jerome hadn’t been in his right mind at the time.

Maybe, if I let things slide, it would eventually blow over.

I banged my head against the wall, groaning.

“There’s no way this will just blow over…”

“Why don’t we just eliminate him? If he knows your life-or-death secret, killing him is the only option. Just give me half a day, and I’ll take care of it.”

“No, we’re not doing that.”

“Why not?”

Why not, indeed.

Because last night, I realized my feelings for Jerome had deepened.

Ber tilted his head, confused by my silence.

Grabbing my throbbing forehead, I trudged to the bathtub.

As I stripped and turned on the water, the red magic circle on my hand caught my eye.

“Maybe Jerome knew all along that Jeanne was a man. But if he did, why did he pretend not to? If he had some ulterior motive…”

I shook off the unsettling thought, soaking in the tub to gather my thoughts.

To be honest, I didn’t have the courage to ask directly.

If I confronted him and he said he was just toying with me, it would break my heart.

“No, enough with the self-pity. I’ll ask him properly.”

It felt ridiculous to be worrying about this after everything that happened last night, but clarity was necessary.

As I rubbed the magic circle on my hand, I firmed my resolve.

“I need to know how Jerome really feels about Jeanne.”

By midday, Jerome still hadn’t woken up.

It wasn’t due to illness; he was merely catching up on sleep.

Not wanting to disturb him, I headed out of the inn with Ber in his human form, hoping to find something to eat.

Even though my whole body ached as if I’d been through unfamiliar contortions, I wasn’t about to skip a meal over a little soreness.

Ber shot me a pitying look as I struggled to walk.

“Why don’t you rest in the inn? It’s painful to watch you suffer. I’ll bring back something easy to eat.”

“It’s not just because I’m hungry. There’s something I want to see.”

Ber tilted his head, puzzled by my response.

Despite the damage from Parak’s rampage, the village’s rapid recovery was thanks to the guild members who escaped unscathed.

I checked the messenger from Marchen, learning that Freya was well and eager to hold the ceremony once again.

“Jeanne, Sister Freya is looking forward to seeing you again. If you’re free, could you come to the village square by 8 p.m. tonight?”

As expected, Freya was incredible.

Even after all that, she still wanted to fulfill her duty. If it had been me, I would’ve taken the excuse to rest.

Makeshift stalls filled the empty square where Parak’s statue once stood.

“Look, they’re selling Rakmolli.”

As soon as I saw a stall selling Rakmolli, I forgot the pain and rushed over.

Just as I reached for the last one, my hand overlapped with someone else’s, slightly faster.

“You’re slow.”

My eyes widened at the familiar voice.

When I slowly turned my head, there was Carlisle, smiling warmly, even though I thought he’d gone back to the capital.

With a casual tap, he brushed my hand away and handed a gold coin to the shopkeeper.

“Keep the change.”

Even if you’re clueless about the ways of the world, who pays with a gold coin for something as simple as a lacmol?

The shopkeeper, delighted to receive the coin, eagerly accepted it.

The man clearly felt lucky, but Carlisle didn’t seem to mind.

Glancing at him munching on street food in a way unbecoming of royalty, I commented as if in passing.

“I thought you’d returned to the capital.”

“There’s been a harsh snowstorm these past few days. I’m completely snowed in.”

“Really? That’s unfortunate.”

“How’s Jerome?”

As Carlisle asked about him, his gaze shifted to the back of my hand.

My face heated up for some reason, and I quickly tucked my hand into my sleeve.

I should’ve worn gloves.

Trying to sound calm, I replied, “He’s passed out. He’s been unwell ever since meeting Parak.”

“I see. Want one?”

Suddenly, Carlisle held out a lacmol.

I flinched at his abrupt offer, and he gestured as if I should eat it.

When I reached out to take it myself, he lifted his arm, clearly intent on feeding me.

Normally, I would’ve just declined, but I was so hungry that I ended up taking the lacmol from his hand.

As I ate, Carlisle fixed his gaze on me and then, out of nowhere, lifted the collar of my shirt to inspect something.

Startled, I quickly slapped his hand away and stepped back.

“What are you doing all of a sudden…?”

“It’s something I found out through a personal connection with the first prince.”

Carlisle’s tone suddenly grew sharp, making my heart drop.

Watching me adjust my shirt, he gave me a smile tinged with irritation.

“Rumor has it there’s talk of an engagement between the royal family and the House of Efilia.”
