Predator Alert chapter 24

* * *

Having felt a chill while deciding whether to wear summer or transitional clothes, Jeongseo had chosen the latter and staggered to his seat.

Despite going to bed early and taking medicine, he were in the worst shape that morning.

He felt both hot and cold, and his tail wouldn’t stay hidden anymore, so he gave up.

Breathing felt laborious, the worst it had been in years.

Jeongseo slumped onto the desk.

Pressing his forehead against the cool wood gave him a slight reprieve.

Ha… every breath he let out felt unnaturally hot, and his senses were heightened to the point of discomfort.

Had the school always been so filled with smells?

The scent of fruits, flowers, and shampoos mixed together haphazardly, and Jeongseo wrinkled his nose, plugging it with his fingers.

As he closed his eyes and tried to block it out, he heard a voice.

“What’s wrong, Jeongseo? Are you sick?”

A chilling scent, one that seemed to cool his entire body, wafted over and almost draped itself across his skin. Its intensity drowned out the other smells, making Jeongseo feel a bit better.

He sluggishly responded, barely able to open his eyes.

“Yesterday… I was working in the field, and I think I might’ve overdone it… I think I’m coming down with something…”

“How hard were you working?”

Pyo Yoontae had just dropped his bag when he leaned over and tried to touch Jeongseo’s forehead. His expression hardened immediately.

“Jeongseo, let’s go to the nurse’s office.”

His hand, which had been heading for his forehead, instead grabbed both of his arms, pulling them up. Feeling weak, Jeongseo frowned in irritation.

“I already took medicine. I’ll just sit here.”

Everything felt like too much effort. But Pyo Yoontae wasn’t backing down, wrapping an arm around Jeongseo’s waist to help them out of the classroom. Jeongseo, finally opening his eyes, glanced at his and pinched his nose.

The scent that had been comforting earlier was now too overwhelming up close.

It was suffocating, and Jeongseo squirmed in discomfort.

His breathing grew even more labored, and the heat from Pyo Yoontae’s large hand around his waist felt like it was scorching them.

“Back off a bit… I can walk on my own…”

“Just stay still. We’re almost there.”

True to his word, he were already in front of the nurse’s office.

Without knocking, Pyo Yoontae opened the door and walked in, though the nurse was nowhere to be found, likely out for a moment.

Without hesitation, Pyo Yoontae laid Jeongseo down on the bed.

Lying down did feel a bit better… no, actually, it made things worse.

Jeongseo rubbed his flushed cheeks and pointed weakly at one of the drawers.

“In there… cold medicine…”

“You’re not sick.”

“…Huh?”

The mattress shifted as Pyo Yoontae leaned closer. He buried his face in the crook of Jeongseo’s neck.

Just the sensation of his breath sent waves of heat through his entire body, and Jeongseo’s fingers curled up.

Pyo Yoontae lifted his head again, locking eyes with Jeongseo before speaking.

“You’re in heat, Jeongseo.”

Your pheromones are leaking.

His yellow eyes seemed unusually dark today.

Hearing the word “heat,” Jeongseo’s eyes wavered. Pyo Yoontae’s breath on his skin felt too hot.

“No, that’s… nngh…”

Pyo Yoontae lightly stroked the ears protruding from Jeongseo’s head. Normally, it would’ve just tickled, but today it sent tingling sensations throughout his body, making his toes curl.

With shallow, ragged breaths, Jeongseo’s eyes began to well up with tears. Anyone could see from his face that he was undoubtedly in heat.

Pyo Yoontae frowned slightly as he stood up straight.

“Of course you’re in heat.”

Telling them to stay still, he rummaged through the drawers and handed Jeongseo an emergency heat suppressant and a glass of water.

“Take this and wait.”

Jeongseo took the medicine and nodded slowly.

Pyo Yoontae left quickly, and Jeongseo slumped against the wall after taking the medicine.

This was strange. He weren’t supposed to go into heat this soon. Jeongseo only had one heat cycle a year, and it usually came between November and December.

It was short and mild enough to recover in just one day, so even Jeongseo was able to go to school after taking some medicine as if nothing had happened.

His hazy brown eyes looked down at the hand lying on top of the blanket.

With trembling hands, Jeongseo unbuttoned the shirt that was fastened up to his neck. He felt suffocated.

The moment he recognized it was a heat, the tickling sensation rising from below became increasingly unbearable.

Letting out a low groan, Jeongseo collapsed sideways onto the bed. With his eyes half-closed, he grabbed the bedsheet, pulling it towards his to bury his face in it.

It was where Pyo Yoontae had been sitting. As if trying to catch even the faintest trace of the Alpha’s scent, Jeongseo rubbed his face against the sheet. The more he smelled it, the worse it got, but it was a scent he couldn’t help but chase.

“…So Jeongseo.”

At the low voice, Jeongseo slowly lifted his head. His unfocused eyes seemed unaware of what he was doing.

Pyo Yoontae bit the inside of his cheek. He covered his nose and mouth with his hand, but since pheromones weren’t just about the scent, it didn’t help much.

“Yoontae… help me.”

This has never happened before, it feels so strange. His tearful eyes never left Pyo Yoontae. Dropping his hand from his face, Pyo Yoontae clenched his jaw.

His lips pressed tightly together, and the veins on his neck faintly bulged. Without a word, Pyo Yoontae reached out to Jeongseo and tightly wrapped his in the thin blanket.

Jeongseo, startled, struggled, but Pyo Yoontae ignored his and lifted his up, blanket and all. Holding onto the writhing form tightly, Pyo Yoontae whispered in a low voice.

“Be glad I’m not a complete pervert, Jeongseo.”

Peeking out from the blanket, Jeongseo looked up at his with dazed eyes.

Fortunately, it was still early in the morning, so the hallways weren’t crowded, but the few students who saw Pyo Yoontae carrying the bundle flinched in surprise.

Lee Hyunsoo, who had just arrived at school, sipping a banana milk, widened his eyes in shock and approached Pyo Yoontae immediately.

“Hey, what’s…?”

The moment Hyunsoo spotted the brown ears poking out of the blanket, Pyo Yoontae turned away.

“Mind your own business.”

There was a chilling sharpness in Pyo Yoontae’s cold gaze, enough to freeze Hyunsoo in place. Without another word, Pyo Yoontae passed his and headed down the stairs.

Even after Pyo Yoontae disappeared, Hyunsoo stood frozen, wide-eyed, while a nearby girl cautiously approached him.

“Hey, what was that? What’s Pyo Yoontae carrying? Why’s he so pissed off? And what’s with the intense pheromone smell?”

“…Uh… I couldn’t smell anything… but it looked like he was carrying Jeongseo…? So Jeongseo…”

She couldn’t be completely sure from the brief glance, but the only one at school who walked around with brown ears exposed was Jeongseo. The nearby students exchanged puzzled glances.

Then someone hesitantly asked, “…Jeongseo was still breathing, right?”

“Are you sure you’re okay to go to school already? I think you should rest for at least one more day,” said his mom.

Jeongseo hugged his backpack with one hand and glanced out the window.

“No, I’m completely fine now. Really.”

“…Still, I should be there for you when you’re like this…”

Hearing the concern in his voice, Jeongseo replied even more cheerfully.

“Really, it’s fine! Even Super Grandma came by, made me porridge, and everything! I’m perfectly okay now, so don’t worry, Mom.”

“I’m relieved to hear that, but let’s go to the hospital during the break, okay? It’s time for a checkup anyway, right?”

Jeongseo hesitated but eventually agreed. Only after several reassurances that he was fine did his mother finally hang up.

It was a quiet weekday morning, and though there were usually some students from his school on the village bus, no one was on board today.

Leaning his head against the window, Jeongseo watched the quickly changing scenery pass by.

‘Why did the heat come all of a sudden?’

The hospital had diagnosed his with irregular cycles since his body hadn’t settled into a proper pattern yet. But for the past three years, his heat had come regularly just once a year, so it felt strange for that pattern to suddenly break.

But thinking about it wouldn’t give his any answers, so Jeongseo shook his head. It had already passed in a day, so that was good enough.

When the bus stopped near the school, Jeongseo got off, calling out a quick “Thank you” to the driver.

His steps felt unusually light as he crossed the school gate, the heat that had suffused his body now feeling like a distant dream. In fact, his memories of the previous day were already fading.

He clearly remembered Pyo Yoontae giving his medicine in the nurse’s office, but everything after that was a blur, as if shrouded in mist.

From what he could piece together, he must have somehow made it home in his homeroom teacher’s car.

Still, he remembered Pyo Yoontae taking care of his very clearly. As he made his way to the classroom, he rummaged through his bag.

His body already knew the way, so with his eyes focused on the contents of his bag, Jeongseo entered the classroom.

But then, the sound of a chair being roughly pushed back startled him, and suddenly, two hands grabbed his face.

As his head was lifted up, his eyes widened in surprise.
