Romance is the Last Thing on a Transmigrated Extra’s Mind chapter 39

* * *

After filling his stomach with some street food, Wookyung refocused on work, but barely an hour later, two members of the design team started packing up.

“We’ll head out first!”

“See you later. Have a great weekend!”

Wookyung gave a small bow in response as they did the same, then instinctively glanced at Director Choi.

He, too, waved a hand in acknowledgment, but his eyes never left the documents in front of him.

From a distance, Wookyung couldn’t make out exactly what they were, but seeing the English text, it was probably something from an overseas partner.

“Wookyung, have you been to Orgatec before?”

“If you mean the Cologne Expo, then yes.”

Every year, the company sends employees to international exhibitions for training.

Of course, not everyone can go—there’s a selection process—but Wookyung usually managed to attend at least once a year.

The Cologne Expo, in particular, was one he had chosen to attend because of an ongoing project he had been working on.

‘Does he already know that?’

Given all the things Director Choi had brought up before, it wasn’t entirely baseless to suspect.

After all, Orgatec was one of the world’s top three office furniture expos.

“Once this schedule wraps up, we’ll head there next. Prepare in advance.”

“…Right away?”

“Yes. Is that a problem?”

“No, not at all.”

Of course, it wasn’t.

In fact, Wookyung had been considering it himself.

He had only thought he wouldn’t be able to apply this time due to various circumstances.

But he hadn’t expected to be going in a way like this.

“Orgatec would be more beneficial, wouldn’t it?”

“I suppose…”

The Shanghai Expo was large and did have office furniture exhibits, but it couldn’t compare to an event solely focused on office furniture.

“But wouldn’t the schedule be too tight if we’re also planning for NeoCon?”

Since the project had been decided, the exhibitions they would attend had also been determined.

The NeoCon furniture expo in Chicago, held every June, was their target.

Going to an autumn exhibition and preparing for NeoCon right after would make things rather hectic. Was that really okay?

It was a reasonable concern, yet for some reason, when Wookyung met Director Choi’s gaze, there was a quiet confidence in his eyes.

Like he had something up his sleeve.

‘If that’s the case, he could at least share what it is.’

Then again, bosses were all like this.

‘Ugh…’

With a sigh, he turned his attention back to his monitor.

“It’ll be fine. You’ve already prepared a lot, haven’t you?”

“I have?”

And what exactly is that?

What was he so confident about?

More importantly, relying solely on me like that—that’s not a very fair way to phrase things.

‘If he’s planning to blame me later if something goes wrong, I won’t let it slide.’

Not that Director Choi seemed like the type to do that, based on what little Wookyung had seen of him so far.

“How much is left?”

“Huh?”

Damn.

He had been lost in thought and responded weirdly.

As he chewed on the inside of his cheek in frustration, Director Choi didn’t seem to notice.

“When will you be done?”

“Oh…”

So he was talking about work.

Well, it wasn’t something that could be finished today.

He still needed to organize things so that Director Choi’s assistant could handle the next steps.

Given the nature of the materials, he couldn’t take them home.

But he also didn’t want to come in tomorrow, even if it was the weekend.

“Hmm… Maybe two more hours?”

“Then you’ll be done before midnight. Good.”

Good? What’s good about that?

He just says these vague things and moves on with his own work.

Wookyung stared at him, incredulous, but Director Choi either didn’t notice or chose to ignore it.

His eyes stayed glued to the papers in front of him, completely indifferent to Wookyung’s scrutiny.

Realizing he wasn’t going to get a reaction, Wookyung gave up and turned back to his own work.

“I’ve got it.”

Wookyung barely registered that Director Choi was on a call.

He wasn’t paying attention—until his own name came up.

“Oh… Wookyung? Yes, he’s doing well. Of course. He’s been a huge help to me.”

Wait, what?

His head instinctively turned in that direction.

Director Choi’s voice was smooth, his tone friendly.

Judging by the familiarity, he was speaking with someone he knew well.

Who? Who was he talking to that had brought up his name?

Curiosity gnawed at him.

He wished Director Choi would look at him while talking so he could read his expression better.

“No, he hasn’t left yet. Sorry, he’s been busy… Oh, no, he’s the one putting in the hard work because of me. Ah, that? Not yet. I would like to, but Wookyung—”

He said Wookyung’s name twice.

Twice.

Who the hell was on the other end of that call?

Couldn’t he just tell him?

Wookyung’s eyes were practically pleading at this point, staring at Director Choi, unable to look away.

As if sensing his gaze, Director Choi smirked.

Don’t smile like that—it only makes me more curious! Just tell me already!

“It’s about time to wrap things up. Wookyung said he’d be leaving before midnight, so I’m planning to take him home. Of course. Like I said, we’re getting closer. Haha… That? I’ll work on it step by step.”

And with that, the answer clicked in Wookyung’s mind.

‘No way…’

A sudden memory surfaced—his father calling him out of the blue not long ago.

Who else would Director Choi be speaking to at this hour with that much courtesy, talking about him so freely?

‘Or maybe my older brother?’

That was possible, given the time difference.

But the tone of voice was too formal—it sounded more like he was talking to an elder.

“I understand. Once this wraps up, I’ll visit with Wookyung. It’s late, so please get some rest, Father.”

And there it was—the final, undeniable confirmation.

Father?

What the hell?

When did he meet my dad to start calling him that?!

Wookyung gawked in disbelief, but Director Choi, completely unfazed, finished the call with unwavering politeness before casually going back to his work.

How was he supposed to ask what that was all about?

He couldn’t just call his dad and demand to know why he’d been chatting with his boss.

‘…I’m going home.’

As soon as he stepped out of the office, he would make the call.

Then, he would find out what exactly had been discussed between them.

Wookyung closed all the programs on his computer and shut it down.

“Are you done?”

As if he had been aware all along, Director Choi—who hadn’t spared him a glance until now—finally showed some interest.

“Yes.”

“I see, then.”

With that, he set aside the documents he had been poring over as if they were of utmost urgency and started tidying up his desk.

“Are you leaving work too, Director?”

“Of course.”

His tone carried the implication of “Why even ask?” Wookyung narrowed his eyes slightly.

Now that he thought about it, earlier when Director Choi had been on the phone, he had mentioned Wookyung’s name along with something about giving him a ride.

Should he bring it up or not?

‘Why bother? He didn’t say anything about it himself.’

If he were the one to bring it up first, it would just make him look ridiculous.

He might as well just call a taxi.

He reached for his phone on the desk and was about to tap the screen when—

“I’ll give you a ride. Get in.”

Once again, Director Choi cut in as if it were nothing.

So, he hadn’t misheard earlier after all.

“No, it’s fine. I can just call a taxi.”

Besides, overtime workers were reimbursed for transportation.

If not now, when else would he use that perk?

“I told your father that I’d personally see you home safely.”

“My father? Who?”

Now that he had a legitimate reason to ask, Wookyung wasn’t about to let it slip by.

The moment he jumped on the question, Director Choi answered smoothly.

“Uncle Seokyung.”

“Why are you calling my dad that way—”

He had been about to ask why Director Choi was addressing his father so familiarly when a memory surfaced.

Back when they had met in front of the company, Director Choi had also used an informal title to refer to Han Seokyung.

At the time, his explanation had been that Seokyung’s father was like an older brother to him.

Since Wookyung hadn’t felt it was his place to comment on that, he had let it slide.

“He asked me to.”

But this time, it wasn’t his so-called ‘brother’ who had requested it—it was the omega’s father himself.

“He said it felt more familiar that way.”

“Oh, seriously!”

What was he supposed to do about this tangled mess of relationships?

Of course, it wasn’t as if Seokyung’s father had anticipated a situation like this when he made the request, but still.

“Then, about that ‘let’s try it out’ thing…”

Since the topic had already come up, Wookyung decided to ask something else that had been bothering him.

As if he had been waiting for the opportunity, Director Choi immediately responded.

“He said it feels odd to be so formal with someone the same age.

He suggested we just call each other by our names—like ‘Wookyung-ah.’”

“Yeah, no thanks.”

He regretted asking.

‘Wookyung-ah’?

Why did his name sound so smooth when Director Choi said it, like candy rolling on his tongue?

Wookyung shook his head firmly and grabbed his bag.

If he didn’t leave now, he had a feeling things would spiral into something he couldn’t handle.

“Let’s go!”

Spending too much time alone with Director Choi was clearly dangerous.

Every time, something happened that threw him off balance.

And, as always, he was the only one feeling uncomfortable about it, which made it all the more frustrating.
