The dazzling wedding hall was just as I remembered it. I had been here about eight times before with CEO Han, so I was quite familiar with the place.
Not far away, I saw a man with a flashy face greeting guests. I glanced at Assistant Yoon, who looked anxious, and spoke.
“Ms. Sanghye, can I hold your hand for a moment?”
“What? Yes, sure.”
I immediately took her hand and led her towards a nearby emergency exit. After checking a few times to make sure no one was around, I looked at her, nervously fidgeting her fingers.
“Straighten your back, and pull in your chin.”
“…What?”
“Why do you let yourself feel so small in front of that jerk? Straighten your back, pull in your chin, and tighten your stomach. Relax your fingers and naturally grip your clutch. If you don’t, it’ll be obvious that you’re nervous.”
Assistant Yoon, dressed in a white lace dress, looked ready for the Daesang Awards with her hair and makeup.
She usually looked tired, but today, she was blossoming like a flower. The reason for this transformation made me a bit bitter, but I didn’t let it show.
“I know you’re a good person, Ms. Sanghye. You need to show that jerk that you’ll live a better life without him. Got it?”
“…Yes.”
“Good. Now, let’s go out there. Keep smiling, and don’t you dare cry. Understand?”
After making her promise several times, I asked for her understanding once more and gently hugged her shoulders.
Just before stepping out of the emergency exit, I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass and let out a small laugh.
A sharp blue suit, clean shoes, white shirt, cufflinks, and a neatly pinned tie, along with slicked-back hair.
I had put in a lot of effort, clearly aiming to make an impression.
There was a clear reason for this.
Today was Saturday, and it was the day that Assistant Yoon’s wretched ex-boyfriend was getting married.
I had dressed as flashily as possible, like a peacock trying to attract a mate.
I wouldn’t have been able to pull this off without Cha Chiyeon’s help.
When she heard I was going to a coworker’s ex’s wedding, she spared no effort in helping me.
The goal was simple: to make the ex feel miserable. I didn’t know how much help I’d be, but I had to do my best.
We walked out of the emergency exit with determined expressions and approached the jerk of an ex-boyfriend.
It was clear that this guy was a social climber. Renting this extravagant wedding hall and attracting so many guests must have been the bride’s doing.
I decided I had to hit where it hurt and walked up to him with a bright smile.
“Hello, nice to meet you.”
“Oh, yes, nice to… Sanghye?”
The jerk, who had been greeting everyone, turned to me and then widened his eyes in shock when he saw Assistant Yoon.
His pupils trembled as if he’d committed a crime, and he stuttered, asking how she got here and why she was here.
“Why are you calling my girlfriend’s name so casually, you piece of trash?”
I forcefully grabbed the hand he was reaching out towards Assistant Yoon and smiled.
“I was curious about what kind of person you were, but it looks like I worried for nothing. A social climber like you won’t get far. You’re not even a dragon of the Han River. You’re just a small fry playing in the same old pond.”
I looked at the tall man who was trembling and then turned to Assistant Yoon, who still seemed anxious. I wrapped my arm around her shoulders and looked back at the wretched ex.
“Babe, were you worried about someone like him when you have me?”
“Who the hell are you?”
“Who am I? I’m the one who’s promised a future with Sanghye.”
I tightened my grip on Assistant Yoon’s shoulder as I spoke.
Remembering CEO Han’s mannerisms, I pulled in my chin, lifted one side of my mouth, and smiled.
“So this is the guy? Nothing special. But since I’m here as a guest, I’ll congratulate you. Congrats on your wedding.”
I didn’t forget to look him up and down as I spoke.
“You’re short, your face is nothing special, so how did this marriage even happen? Oh, I’m suddenly worried about your future kids. I recommend you don’t have any. For the sake of their future, make sure to use contraception. Sanghye, you made the right decision breaking up with him. And to you, I should say thanks. I was worried you might be someone impressive, but thankfully, you’re just mediocre. I won’t even be jealous. Social climbers like you always forget that you’re just a loach.”
As I sneered, Assistant Yoon stepped forward, clenching her fists and pointing at her ex.
“You! You pathetic bastard! I waited for you, thinking you were trying your best, and you stabbed me in the back? You’re just a piece of trash! You look just like your disgusting semen! Like a glob of slime! And you’re a rabbit! You finish in three seconds, and I was miserable because of it! Actually, rabbits are better—they’re at least cute! Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”
The ex’s face turned red as he shouted incoherently and raised his hand to threaten Assistant Yoon. I reached out to grab his arm, thinking I needed to stop him.
“You trash, coming to someone’s wedding and causing a scene…!”
“Why don’t you talk politely? Before I really wreck your wedding.”
“You bastard, who do you think you are?”
As I gritted my teeth, trying to hold him back, I felt my strength starting to wane.
Damn Omega traits. I used to be stronger than this, but now my arm was trembling.
The one causing a scene at the wedding wasn’t me—it was this guy. People were starting to notice the commotion.
Despite that, he seemed too shocked by what Assistant Yoon had said to see anything else.
“Yoon Sanghye, get out of here right now! You’re just a poor girl with nothing but a pretty face…!”
Just then, a shadow fell across my vision, and an arm, clad in a sharp suit, grabbed the man’s wrist. I was so surprised by the familiar face that I couldn’t help but call out her name.
“Gayun?”
“Seonyul? What a pleasant surprise!”
Jeong Gayun smiled at me like a flower in bloom.
After lightly tossing the ex aside, she looked at me and Assistant Yoon with a thoughtful expression.
“It’s nice to see you, but it’d be better if you left quickly.”
“What? What do you mean…?”
“Do you know who the bride is?”
“…No. And leaving is a bit difficult, Gayun.”
“Well, then… See that quiet spot outside the hall? It’d be better if you stayed there. Oh, and I’ll keep your secret. Just make sure to thank me later. And bring orange juice.”
She glanced at Assistant Yoon and then urged me to leave.
At the same time, the guy who had been pushed away started cursing loudly.
I quickly grabbed Assistant Yoon and hurried out of the hall.
A small commotion was spreading behind us.
“Phew…”
My palms were sweating, so I clenched and unclenched them a few times, then awkwardly smiled as I carefully let go of Assistant Yoon’s hand.
“Are you okay? What that jerk said…”
“That piece of trash! That scumbag! I wouldn’t be satisfied even if I boiled his organs in soup! Ugh! I can’t believe I celebrated his birthday with a cake! I should’ve thrown it in his face!”
Assistant Yoon was fuming, but there was no sign of sadness or anything like that on her face.
She looked around, as if she really wanted to throw something, and stomped her foot in frustration.
A few passersby glanced our way.
“Should I give you something to throw?”
Thinking that I should hand her something before she really caused a scene at the wedding, I looked around and pointed to a fire extinguisher.
“How about that?”
She followed my hand with her gaze, alternating between me and the fire hydrant for a while, before suddenly laughing.
She went from being angry to laughing… I couldn’t help but worry about her mental state.
I awkwardly patted her shoulder.
“Do you really want to just leave after spraying it?”
At those words, Assistant Yoon laughed for a long time, wiping the tears from her eyes with her fingers as she replied.
“Oh, Seonyul, thank you. But even though I’m in the working world now, I can’t do something like that. It’s okay. Seeing that inadequate fool’s lowly state actually feels a bit refreshing. The only thing I regret is not being able to hit him? But… that’s alright too.”
Assistant Yoon took a few deep breaths, fanning herself with her hand and placing her hand on her waist.
The tension that was evident just a moment ago seemed to have vanished, and she looked perfectly fine now. It was as if everything was back to normal.
Sensing my gaze, Yoon cheerfully asked.
“Why? Did you expect me to go right into the middle of the wedding and shout ‘I object!’?”
Did she think I meant something as trivial as asking for an extra serving of pork belly?
Honestly, given how distressed she had been, I thought she might actually cause a scene. It made me feel foolish for having searched online for ‘disrupting a wedding.’
But she had chosen a more moderate approach, even if her tone didn’t reflect that.
“I was going to, but then I thought, if they’re offering to clean up the trash, why should I stop them? It would be pitiful for a bride married to a trash can…”
She said this with a smirk, straightened her disheveled clothes, and smiled.
“I’m satisfied just having seen his face and vented some anger. Oh, and I noticed you seemed to know him earlier. Who is he?”
“She’s the Executive Director of QK Capital. I’ve seen him around a lot with the CEO… She’s the one who’s been persistently sending me job offers.”
Yoon gave a friendly nod as she smiled slightly.
“Well, Secretary Seonyul, I’m sure you’ll be well treated wherever you go. Oh! But I’m not saying you should quit. You can’t leave. Without you, the secretary’s office would fall apart!”
