Fang Shucheng chased after him, but Wei Jie, being more athletic, evaded him until they reached the bookstore.
Fang Shucheng couldn’t catch him, so he left him alone and started looking for books himself.
Wei Jie wandered to the magazine section, flipped through a few, lost patience, and headed back to find Fang Shucheng in the study guide section.
Fang Shucheng was seriously picking out exercise books, frowning slightly.
He picked up one book, put it down, picked up another, and then went back to the first, looking indecisive.
Wei Jie walked over and, since they were in a bookstore, leaned close to Fang Shucheng ‘s ear and whispered, “Are you done yet? I’m bored to death.”
Fang Shucheng whispered back, “I told you to play basketball, but you insisted on coming.”
Wei Jie changed his tone, “Playing basketball isn’t as fun as hanging out with you. I was just saying.”
Fang Shucheng was frustrated and snapped, “Who’s playing around?”
Wei Jie glanced at the two books in Fang Shucheng’s hand. “Having trouble choosing again?”
Fang Shucheng nodded.
Wei Jie nonchalantly said, “Just get both then.”
Fang Shucheng sighed, “But I don’t have any money left. I was hoping to try out that new dessert place this week.”
Wei Jie was speechless. “That’s all?”
“If you’re out of money, use my allowance.”
Fang Shucheng hadn’t forgotten the “little wife” nickname and immediately clarified, “No way. Your money is yours, I won’t use it.”
“You can pay me back later.” Wei Jie, tired of arguing, grabbed both study guides from Fang Shucheng and picked out a matching set for himself. “Let’s go pay. We’ll each get a copy.”
Fang Shucheng was so moved by Wei Jie willingly buying study guides that he nearly cried with joy. “You’re finally getting serious about studying! It’s not too late. Even if you don’t get into a top university, you can still aim for a decent one…”
Wei Jie put the books on the counter and directed Fang Shucheng , “Wifey, pay up.”
Fang Shucheng was immersed in the fact that Wei Jie was willing to study hard, didn’t bother correcting the nickname or insisting on whose allowance was whose, nor did he notice the strange looks from the cashier.
With one hand, Wei Jie carried Fang Shucheng ‘s schoolbag and the newly purchased books in the other.
Fang Shucheng came to his senses and reached out, “Give me one.”
Wei Jie glanced at him, “Just focus on walking. Aren’t you trying to lose weight? Look at those skinny arms.”
Fang Shucheng pinched his arm, thinking it was fine—well-proportioned and solid.
But he did like being slim, so he took Wei Jie’s comment as a compliment, puffed out his chest proudly, “I just can’t gain weight no matter what. Hey, where are you going? Not heading home?”
Wei Jie naturally responded, “Aren’t we getting desserts?”
Fang Shucheng hesitated, thinking of his unfinished homework, then firmly said, “Let’s go on the weekend.”
Wei Jie shook his head, “We’re grilling with Zhuang Yi and the others on the weekend. It’s hot now, let’s have something cold.”
That was… a pretty good reason. Fang Shucheng lost his resolve and happily followed Wei Jie, but he had a question, “Don’t you dislike sweets?”
“You like them,” Wei Jie said.
Seeing Fang Shucheng rummaging through his schoolbag for a pen, he resisted the urge to pat Fang Shucheng ‘s butt.
“What are you doing?” He asked anxiously.
Fang Shucheng replied, “I owe you twenty for the books. I’ll pay you back on Alipay when we get home. A good memory is not as reliable as a bad pen. I’m noting it down so I don’t forget.”
Phones were not allowed at school, so he could only use Alipay at home. He was worried he’d forget once he started his homework.
Wei Jie reassured him, “We’ll settle up after the desserts.”
Fang Shucheng thought that made sense and nodded.
At the dessert shop, Fang Shucheng had planned to order mango sago, but the photo of double-skin milk on the menu reminded him of its smooth, cool texture, and he couldn’t decide.
Wei Jie, who disliked sticky desserts in the summer, watched Fang Shucheng choose and idly counted his eyelashes.
Fang Shucheng’s lashes fluttered as he looked at the menu, making Wei Jie feel a tickle in his heart.
He indulged in this excited emotion, feeling great. As he said himself, spending time with Fang Shucheng was much more interesting than playing basketball.
After a long internal struggle, Fang Shucheng finally made a choice: “I’ll have the mango sago. What about you?”
Wei Jie came back to his senses and smiled, “I’ll have the rose and cherry double-skin milk.”
Fang Shucheng’s eyes lit up, “Then let’s switch and try each other’s later.”
Wei Jie put his right foot on his left knee, crossed his arms, and said in a nonchalant manner: “Sure, but you have to eat all the roses.”
In light of the delicious double-skin milk, Fang Shucheng overlooked Wei Jie’s nonchalant attitude and only said, “If you don’t like the roses, you can get a different flavor.” Anyway, all double-skin milk was delicious.
Wei Jie clicked his tongue, “No way, I just like giving the roses to you.”
