“Wh-what?”
“You smell good.”
Henry shuddered at the chilling sensation, instinctively wrapping his arms around himself and trying to move as far from Edwin as possible.
But in the confined space of the carriage, his back quickly hit the wall.
“How are you even here?”
Henry swallowed repeatedly, trying to remain composed.
His trembling eyes and desperate attempts to distance himself from Edwin were obvious signs of his panic, but anything was better than staying silent.
Instead of answering, Edwin just stared at Henry’s face.
From the sweat-dampened forehead to his restless eyes and half-open mouth, Edwin’s gaze sharpened.
The fog clouding his mind was clearing.
“I watched you enter the cave.”
Edwin had been observing Henry since the moment he left the mansion.
Even as Henry climbed back up the cliff, rope tied to his waist with Sir Teher’s help, Edwin had been nearby. Hiding his presence wasn’t difficult; all he had to do was stay still, as always.
This time, though, he’d even suppressed his pheromones.
It wasn’t necessary, but his instincts had told him to.
Edwin moved away from the window and approached the door.
As Henry debated escaping through the opposite door, Edwin opened the carriage door and stepped inside.
“Wh-why are you coming in?”
“The old woman said so.”
Edwin was referring to the fortune-teller Crown Prince William had once taken him to.
But with Edwin suddenly inside the carriage, Henry didn’t immediately grasp who he was talking about.
“She said you hold the key to unlocking my frustration.”
“What are you talking about…? Wait, don’t tell me…”
Henry belatedly remembered the fortune teller.
The old woman, known for her powers, had sensed when his soul had entered another body.
If she had been able to understand his situation, perhaps she could also understand Edwin’s condition.
“The fortune teller was right. Following my instincts, it all makes sense now.”
“…Speak plainly. What exactly makes sense?”
Henry wiped the sweat from his forehead, pretending to brush aside his hair.
Showing any more signs of nervousness would reveal his weakness to Edwin.
He needed to maintain his usual nonchalance, as if nothing were out of the ordinary.
But before Henry could change the subject, Edwin swiftly grabbed his wrist, overpowering him with strength that Henry couldn’t resist.
“Edwin!”
Henry tried to brace himself, but it was useless.
Edwin pulled Henry’s wrist closer and sniffed it. His eyes lifted upward to meet Henry’s gaze.
“I was merely watching you, following my instincts. Since you’re my key, I was only trying to figure out its true nature.”
“You’re just testing me, relying on that fortune teller’s nonsense.”
“This… is pheromones, isn’t it?”
“That’s ridiculous. Betas don’t produce pheromones.”
Henry immediately denied it.
He recalled a similar accusation before, and if he could just spin the situation again…
“You’re an Omega.”
Edwin wasn’t listening to Henry’s protests.
As everything the old woman had said began to make sense, a large picture of their situation started to come together in his mind.
“You’ve been an Omega all along. That episode of yours must’ve been triggered by me. After all, my pheromones surrounded your body so many times.”
This meant that only Edwin could calm Henry’s episodes.
The thought that even the Alpha pheromones of Henry’s personal guards wouldn’t have worked brought a satisfied, uncharacteristically soft smile to Edwin’s face.
As the picture in his mind became clearer, Edwin focused on the thick cloud of Henry’s pheromones filling the carriage.
With half-lidded eyes, he licked his lips, as if regretful that the pheromones were escaping through the open window.
Then, suddenly, Edwin pulled Henry’s wrist behind his back.
“Ugh.”
Henry was thrown off balance, instinctively raising his hands, one of which touched Edwin’s chest.
At the same time, Edwin’s hand found the back of Henry’s neck.
Before Henry could push him away, Edwin buried his face in Henry’s neck.
Shocked, Henry, who had been holding onto a pheromone stone, desperately tried to pull away from him.
“Stop.”
Henry pushed against Edwin’s shoulders and chest, struggling to keep him from inhaling his pheromones, but Edwin’s grip was like a hook, holding him firmly in place.
“You’re an Omega, aren’t you?”
Edwin whispered, his voice brushing softly against Henry’s ear.
The sensation was so unsettling that it made Henry shudder, and he shook his head violently.
“No, no I’m not.”
Henry kept denying it, refusing to accept the truth, even though he could see the determined look in Edwin’s eyes.
He had to keep lying.
If he didn’t, he felt like he’d be consumed entirely by Edwin.
“Henry.”
Despite knowing he couldn’t escape, Henry’s frantic denial made Edwin raise an eyebrow.
Henry’s nails were breaking from scratching himself so hard, desperate to get away.
Seeing this, Edwin loosened his grip.
Once freed, Henry quickly moved back, but he soon hit a wall.
Raising his hands, he tried to stop Edwin from approaching.
“Don’t come any closer.”
“The more you resist, the more suspicious I become.”
Despite his calm expression, as though he already knew all the answers, Edwin’s words continued to provoke Henry.
“It’s not like that… Damn it, why is this…”
Breathing heavily, Henry cursed himself for letting things escalate like this.
It was all his fault.
He should’ve hidden himself better.
His impatience had kept him from distancing himself from Edwin.
“Edwin, just calm down and listen to me.”
“Why should I listen to someone who lies every time they open their mouth?”
“Edwin!”
“Why not confirm it physically? It’d be faster.”
“…What?”
Henry didn’t fully understand what Edwin meant until he felt Edwin’s pheromones flood the air.
His face turned pale, and his whole body trembled as if struck by a storm.
Seeing Henry’s reaction, Edwin was certain.
Henry had acted strangely several times before, all in response to his pheromones.
With a fascinated look, Edwin released even more of his scent, letting it mix with Henry’s in the carriage.
“You’ve been able to sense my pheromones all along, haven’t you?”
“That’s…”
Henry’s lips moved, but no words came out. His mind was blank, overwhelmed by Edwin’s pheromones, unable to think of anything to say.
“There’s only one reason we can sense each other’s pheromones.”
Edwin stepped closer, tightening the invisible net around Henry, his expression calm and confident.
“Imprinting.”
“…”
“You’ve been able to sense my pheromones.”
Henry, overwhelmed by Edwin’s pheromones, couldn’t move, his body frozen in place.
“And I’ve been able to sense yours. That only happens in an imprint.”
“No.”
Henry’s voice was strained, like it was being choked.
“If I break the bond… then…”
“Henry.”
Edwin knelt on one knee, lifting one of Henry’s limp hands and gently holding it.
He pulled out a sachet, and Henry’s gaze returned to Edwin in realization.
No, it couldn’t be…
In front of Henry, Edwin opened the sachet and pulled out a ring that had been hidden under the shredded petals and loosened threads.
He had hidden it in the cloth folds, making it impossible for Henry to notice.
Edwin slid the ring onto Henry’s ring finger.
Though it was just returning what had always been his, it felt like a marriage proposal between an Alpha and an Omega.
“Now, you have to admit it.”
“You…”
“You’re my Omega.”
A wave of emotion crossed Edwin’s face, a sense of joy in finding his Omega.
After five long years, a bright smile spread across Edwin’s face.
