Judging you as pitiful because you don’t know love chapter 9

* * *

As we ventured deeper into a shady area, I prepared to draw my sword the moment we arrived.

The abandoned building we stopped at felt suspicious, especially with the faint presence of multiple people inside.

Resting my hand on the hilt of my sword, I cautiously stepped in.

There was no way Vasco would lead me to a temple or something out of the blue, right?

When we arrived, I was taken aback.

“Are you Raul?”

A stunningly handsome young boy stepped out of the dilapidated building.

His appearance didn’t match the rundown surroundings at all.

My hand paused on my sword hilt, and I let it drop.

Draped in a white veil and adorned in luxurious clothing, he was clearly a noble.

Messing with him would mean serious trouble.

Wow, that was close.

If I’d drawn my sword, I’d already be locked away in a dungeon somewhere, and the human world would be doomed.

My heart was racing.

“Yes, I’m Raul.”

Despite my shock, I maintained proper etiquette upon meeting a noble.

I lowered my gaze and bowed respectfully.

Judging by the presences inside, the other figures in the building must be his bodyguards.

“To what do I owe the honor of your visit, my lord? What business does such a noble and elegant young master have with a humble adventurer like me?”

“Raise your head.”

I refused at first.

Looking a noble in the face rarely ends well for commoners.

If he had something to say, he could send a servant.

Why come himself?

Was he planning to sell me off or something?

“I said, raise it.”

This time, I obeyed.

Refusing twice might get me into more trouble.

Nobles have the power to turn a completely innocent person into a criminal by accusing them of disrespect.

When I raised my head, the boy smiled softly, his golden hair gleaming like honey and his blue eyes sparkling.

He was the very image of a beautiful young aristocrat, with a face so small and skin so flawless it was almost blinding.

“Thank you.”

What is this?

‘Why would a noble suddenly thank me?’

Confused, I turned to Vasco for an explanation.

I shot him a look demanding to know what was going on, but all he gave me in return was a self-satisfied grin.

Seeing him still looking smug even now, I let out a small sigh of relief.

That guy is so innocent for an adventurer.

He’s bound to run into trouble one of these days.

“I don’t recall doing anything that warrants your gratitude.”

Feigning humility seemed like the safest response since I had no idea what was happening.

But then, through the thin veil, I caught a glimpse of a red mark.

Could it be?

“Thanks to you, I didn’t have to marry that bald old man. You’re my savior.”

“Oh.”

‘The youngest son of the Hessler family.’

I had assumed he’d end up married off to some noblewoman, but he was almost sold off to an older man?

In that case, I could understand why he’d be so grateful.

Now that I was getting a better look at him, his face wasn’t even ruined or anything.

If something this trivial was enough to break off the engagement, it meant his family must have seen potential spouses as nothing more than decorative dolls.

“So, I wanted to at least meet you and say thank you. It’s been great for me, but I do feel a bit guilty since this must have caused a lot of trouble for you.”

“This was my mistake, so there’s no need to apologize.”

The truth was, the Hesslers weren’t proper nobles but rather nouveau riche, so I didn’t feel compelled to be overly formal.

Even so, once I realized this situation was real, I started to feel tempted.

Would he really help me?

If so, playing along and picking up whatever scraps fell my way seemed like the smart thing to do.

Could I really get through this without losing any money?

Having extra funds is always useful! I could stockpile food before a war breaks out or even support the hero.

That way, I might be able to ease the guilt of having taken away the hero’s chance to turn back time.

“They don’t seem to think of it that way.”

The youngest Hessler glanced at Vasco.

Could it be?

Did Vasco sneak into the Hessler estate?

‘You idiot.’

My heart sank.

What had happened to Vasco during the war?

I couldn’t remember clearly.

I hadn’t heard much from him, so I had probably assumed he was dead.

We must have been close, but I had erased him from my memory.

We’d likely been good comrades, but I had blacked it all out because there hadn’t been room to think about anything but survival.

A chill ran through my head.

How many times had I doubted Vasco since arriving here?

My way of thinking was still stuck in the warzone, where even pure goodwill felt suspicious.

I felt ashamed.

‘I need to treat him better.’

Even if he’s the kind of fool who misinterprets any unusual behavior as a death sentence…

Well, people like that tend to be simple and loyal, unlikely to betray you.

“That said, I can’t help you directly. If my father found out, it’d be a disaster. But I do have some useful information.”

The boy grinned mischievously.

“Hey, are you serious?”

As we left the abandoned building, Vasco followed behind me, eyes wide with disbelief.

I wished he’d stop pestering me.

I was on the verge of crying blood over this decision myself.

Why can’t life ever go the way I want?

“Why would you turn that down? Because it’s a raid? Don’t tell me!”

“I told you, I’m busy for the next week.”

“What could be more important than this? Are you quitting adventuring? You’d need to pay off breach fees before you even get another job!”

He wasn’t wrong.

As an adventurer, reputation is everything.

A bad reputation means no clients, and even if you hunt beasts on your own, there’d be no one to buy the spoils.

But still.

“The truth is, I have a really important mission, so I can’t.”

“What the hell is it?”

“I’m saving humanity.”

“What, did you eat something spoiled?”

“No.”

It would’ve been nice if that were the case, but no. Here’s the gist of the information:

A group of dark mages was moving in secret to escape the royal family’s surveillance.

With heavy monitoring in place, they seemed to be trying to establish a new base.

However, their forces had been severely weakened due to the royal crackdown.

‘A raid could net us some serious loot.’

Sure, it was essentially robbery, but the targets were dark mages designated as enemies by the royal family.

Even if we hurt them, no one would care.

The problem was, the operation would take over a week.

“So what is it? Are you out of your mind?”

“You wouldn’t understand the depth of this great brother’s intentions.”

The issue was, I had foolishly wished for something like spending a week with the hero.

“What the hell are you even talking about?”

“It’s a long story. Let me think about it and get back to you. There’s still time.”

Of course, if possible, I’d definitely—definitely—want to go.

There’s no adventurer who dislikes money.

But I’d only spent a day with the hero, and I couldn’t give up the remaining six days to go chase treasure. Think about it.

‘Can’t I just push the six days back to after the raid? It’s still a week.’

‘No way.’

Even in my imagination, I could hear a cold rejection echoing in my head.

The thought of easy money made me want to cry, but humanity had to come first.

If only I hadn’t committed those crimes…

This is why people shouldn’t live dishonestly.

It all comes back to haunt you.

With no other choice, I decided to leave Vasco and head to the adventurer’s guild.

We hadn’t agreed on where to meet, but in cases like this, the guild was the usual rendezvous point.

But then—

“There you are.”

A familiar voice.

A familiar intimidating presence.

“Ugh.”

And familiar reactions from those around us.

It was the hero.

Had he been looking for me?

Honestly, I was touched.

I was the one clinging to him, after all.

I thought he’d just go about his business and leave me to my own devices.

That’s why I hadn’t gone back home yet and was heading to the guild early instead.

I figured I’d just loiter there until the hero showed up, whenever that might be.

But the hero had actually waited for me to join him.

Not at the guild, but actively searching for me around town.

I was so moved I could almost cry.

At the very least, this meant he understood that I wanted to stick by him for purely selfless reasons.

“Were you looking for me? So we could travel together? That’s seriously touching.”

Of course, the hero neither confirmed nor denied it.

But that was just his personality, and I didn’t mind.

“I feel bad for making you wander around. Let’s set a meeting time for tomorrow. When works for you?”

As I tried to chat casually, I could feel Vasco panicking behind me.

The hero still intimidated him, clearly. Understandable.

He’s overwhelmingly strong, hard to read, and his sheer aura makes you feel small, like prey in front of a predator.

But he’s still a hero.

The kind of person chosen by the gods—strong, steadfast, and capable of saving humanity.

No matter what danger or hardship comes, he’s the kind of person who would never run away.

It’s difficult for anyone, no matter how strong-willed, to shoulder the future of all humanity.

The Hero, however, stood back up every time he fell, no matter how many defeats he suffered or how many times he was brought to his knees, and continued to fight against the demons.

He must have been terrified and tormented, yet he never once ran away.

Even if he ultimately fell to the Demon King, his nobility remained undiminished.

If only he could have wielded the Holy Sword, the Hero would have defeated the Demon King.

I firmly believe that.

The Hero is someone so noble that even the gods chose him.

He would never hurt another person carelessly.

The way I can interact with him so easily stems from my unwavering faith in him.

Of course, Vasco wouldn’t know anything about that.

Idk why but it feels like he accidentally planted a flag

Definitely giving unreliable narrator vibes and I know us the readers and Raul himself are missing something from the whole picture and it’s irritating me like when you get a cardboard cut

I actually like that kind of suspense
