Dowon wasn’t satisfied with Jihoon’s sarcastic review, but realizing he wouldn’t get any more meaningful feedback, he finally backed off as promised.
As soon as Dowon withdrew his foot from the doorway, the door slammed shut.
Useless guy.
Can’t even properly taste chicken.
Dowon thought Jihoon was pathetic but quickly dismissed the thought.
After all, he had decided to try to get along with Seo Jihoon.
I’d like to study chicken flavors a bit more…
Dowon returned home, pondering how to improve the quality of the chicken, and turned on the TV.
Just in time, a show about famous chicken restaurants was on.
On the screen, there were many people lined up in front of a chicken restaurant.
A place good enough to draw such a crowd, huh?
“Hmm…”
Dowon decided he needed to explore this famous chicken restaurant himself.
ꔚ
The chicken restaurant featured on TV was within reach from Dowon’s place by bus and subway.
Having never used public transport other than a taxi, Dowon headed to the bus stop, relying on his phone for guidance.
“So, I just tap my card or phone on the reader to get on the bus. And I press the bell when I want to get off.”
Thinking it seemed simple enough, Dowon waited for bus 88, as suggested by the ‘fastest route finder.’
After a ten-minute wait, the bus arrived, and Dowon got on.
Mimicking the others, he tapped his phone on the card reader, but the bus driver called out to him.
“Hey, it didn’t go through properly. Try again.”
Feeling a bit annoyed, Dowon tapped his phone on the reader again, but still, it didn’t register.
Dowon glared at his phone in frustration.
Meanwhile, people began to push in from behind.
He stepped aside, rummaging through his wallet for a card.
Just then, a young boy who had just boarded snickered at Dowon.
With a smug look, the boy tapped his phone on the card reader and confidently walked over to an empty seat.
Feeling an odd sense of defeat against a boy much younger than himself, Dowon finally managed to board after successfully tapping his card.
Once inside the bus, Dowon looked for a seat and ended up next to the boy who had mocked him earlier, crossing his legs as he sat.
His first experience on a bus was far from comfortable. He disliked being around so many people.
Enduring this agonizing journey solely out of a determination to avenge his grudge against PetitRolang, Dowon’s patience was wearing thin when the boy next to him began furiously tapping away on his phone.
“Damn… Die! Why won’t this thing die!”
“Could you be a bit quieter? You’re quite uncivilized.”
Dowon reprimanded the boy in a calm tone. The boy glanced at him briefly before refocusing on his phone.
“What’s your problem? You’re such a boomer…”
“What did you just say?”
Puzzled by the slang, Dowon fixed his eyes on the boy.
Under Dowon’s intense, questioning gaze, the boy, visibly uncomfortable, suddenly stood up, squeezing past Dowon to move away.
The boy rang the bell and got off at the next stop.
“Kids these days have no manners.”
Watching the boy disappear from the bus window, Dowon thought he would try to have a more loving attitude toward children, despite his initial feelings, and turned away.
After several more stops, Dowon finally reached the stop he’d been eyeing and got off the bus.
Entering the subway station as the ‘fastest route finder’ had instructed, Dowon realized that finding his way wasn’t as straightforward as simply boarding the train.
Why is this so complicated?
This journey to the restaurant felt like exploring uncharted territory to Dowon.
He carefully watched the direction people were heading and followed them.
This led him to the turnstiles. Mimicking others, he tapped his card and continued following the crowd until he reached the platform, which was divided into two sides.
Which one am I supposed to take? Does it matter which one? While Dowon hesitated, a train arrived on one side. He boarded the first train that came.
As the train doors closed, Dowon noticed a screen on one side of the train.
It displayed the train’s destination and the next station.
So that’s why there were two platforms—one for each direction.
Checking his phone, Dowon realized he had boarded the train going the opposite way.
His lips twitched in frustration.
As soon as the train arrived at the next station, Dowon got off and switched to the opposite platform.
To make matters worse, there were no available seats on the train he boarded.
If the food at this so-called famous restaurant isn’t good after all this trouble, I won’t let it slide.
Dowon’s eyes glinted with a menacing light as he imagined the unknown chicken restaurant owner.
After several trials and tribulations, Dowon finally arrived at the desired station.
Exiting through Exit 3, he followed the map’s directions.
As he got closer to the chicken restaurant featured on TV, the buzz of conversation grew louder, and soon he saw a long line of people.
Are they all waiting to eat chicken? Visiting a famous restaurant is really no easy feat.
Dowon furrowed his brows slightly, then stuffed his hands into his hoodie pockets and took his place at the end of the line.
Everyone was either with a partner, friends, or family, chatting away as they waited for their turn.
While waiting for hours, driven by the sole desire to taste the chicken, a woman in a chicken restaurant apron approached Dowon and spoke to him.
“Are you here alone?”
“Yes.”
“Are you dining in? What chicken would you like to order?”
“One fried chicken.”
The simplest option would likely be the best for tasting. It was also featured on TV as a place with great fried chicken.
He, having committed the menu Dowon ordered to memory, asked the same question to the person behind him.
After enduring quite a bit of hardship, Dowon finally managed to enter the store. The inside was just as crowded and bustling as it was outside.
No sooner had Dowon sat down at the designated table than the fried chicken he had ordered arrived.
As he recalled the journey it took to get to this point, he poked at the chicken leg with a fork.
Observing the chicken from various angles, he soon stripped a piece of meat and put it into his mouth.
Chewing slowly to gauge the flavor, Dowon felt the same shock as the first time he had tasted chicken. The batter on the outside was crispy, while the meat inside was tender and chewy.
Moreover, perhaps due to the spices used in the seasoning, the chicken was not greasy but rather light and clean.
It was so delicious that he began to doubt if it was even in the same category as the chicken he had made.
“How did they make this?”
The chicken piqued Dowon’s curiosity. In pure admiration of the flavor, he stripped off more meat and ate it.
With each bite, instead of feeling sated, his taste buds clamored for more, as if to say this wasn’t nearly enough.
If he had known it would be like this, he would have ordered two chickens.
Finishing the whole chicken in no time at all, Dowon left the chicken shop with a hint of regret.
Upon stepping outside, he saw that the line in front of the chicken shop had not shortened at all and had, in fact, grown even longer.
At first, he had wondered why people would line up so long for chicken, no matter how delicious it was. Now, he understood how they felt.
Staring at the chicken shop’s sign, Dowon resolved to create a fried chicken even more delicious than this one.
He would make a chicken that even PetitRolang would be impressed by.
