The sun rose in the west.
Jian Zhile only got up slowly after the child finally fell into a deep sleep, taking out a mop to clean the water in the living room. He returned the basin and towel to their original places, thinking about how such a small child managed to do all this.
In the afternoon,
The sun after the rain was bright and splendid, shining through the glass windows.
An An woke up from his nap, instinctively reaching out beside him but not touching anyone. He suddenly panicked and opened his eyes, seeing the empty space beside him. The newly awake child was overwhelmed with the fear of being abandoned, his eyes reddened, and he started to sob, “Daddy…”
The bedroom door was pushed open the next second.
Still carrying the aroma of cooking, Jian Zhile, wearing an apron, walked in with a smile. “Awake?”
An An’s tears were stuck in his eyes, blinking in confusion.
Jian Zhile walked over and asked, “Are you hungry?”
The child hadn’t eaten anything since last night and was starving, though he didn’t realize it in the morning due to sleepiness. Now that Jian Zhile mentioned it, his stomach growled, and he nodded gently, saying, “Hungry.”
Jian Zhile chuckled, walking over to put shoes on the child sitting by the bed. “Let’s go. The food is ready.”
Holding An An’s small hand, Jian Zhile led him out. Several dishes were already set on the dining table: stir-fried green peppers with potatoes, tomato and egg, and a bowl of steamed egg custard. Though simple, the dishes smelled delicious.
An An’s eyes lit up, and his soft little voice exclaimed with joy, “Wow!”
Jian Zhile walked into the kitchen to fetch bowls and chopsticks, saying, “Wash your hands before eating.”
An An nodded obediently, “Okay!”
Jian Zhile was worried the child might not manage washing his hands well. After setting the table, he turned around only to find the child already at the sink, washing his hands and even turning off the tap.
An An spread his white little hands like a treasure, showing them to Jian Zhile, his voice sweet, “Daddy, An An washed clean!”
Jian Zhile turned to look at him.
In the quiet afternoon, sunlight streamed through the window, casting a golden halo on the small figure’s shoulders, making him look like An Angel. His curved eyebrows and smiling face brought a sense of liveliness and warmth, dispelling the room’s coldness.
Jian Zhile beckoned, “Come here.”
The child obediently ran to him.
Jian Zhile took a napkin from the table to dry An An’s hands and praised him, “You washed very clean, good job, An An. Let’s eat now!”
An An smiled at the praise, but instead of immediately eating, he looked at Jian Zhile and said, “Daddy, you eat too.”
Jian Zhile sat beside him and said, “Okay, let’s eat together.”
The child needed softer food.
Jian Zhile scooped some steamed egg custard into the child’s bowl with a spoon, saying, “An An, mix the rice with the egg custard.”
An An nodded obediently, “Okay!”
Jian Zhile thought the hungry child would start eating earnestly, but An An used his spoon to scoop a piece of the egg custard and gently placed it into Jian Zhile’s bowl.
Surprised, Jian Zhile looked up at him.
An An’s eyes were dark and round, with a clear light in them. He softly said, “Daddy, you eat too…”
Jian Zhile felt warmth in his heart. He suddenly felt that all the effort he spent in the kitchen, even cooking the egg custard he wasn’t good at, was worth it. He nodded, “Okay, I’ll eat too.”
Only then did An An smile, eating his meal with the spoon obediently.
Jian Zhile asked, “Is it good?”
“Yummy!” An An’s cheeks were puffed, like a cute little squirrel. He said, “An An likes Daddy’s cooking.”
Jian Zhile used chopsticks to add more food to his bowl, feeling immensely satisfied, “If you like it, eat more.”
After all, they would be going to the police station in the afternoon. Once they found the child’s real parents, there wouldn’t be another chance to cook for him.
As Jian Zhile watched the child happily eating, his phone suddenly buzzed a few times. He took it out and saw it was his grandmother calling. The elderly couple rarely contacted him unless there was something important. He answered the call, “Hello, Grandma.”
A familiar, kind voice came through the phone.
Jian Zhile stood up, telling the child, “An An, eat your meal. I’ll take this call.”
An An obediently nodded.
Jian Zhile went to his bedroom, closing the door slightly. He then said, “Grandma, what made you think of calling me?”
His grandmother’s familiar, gentle voice came through, “Lele, who were you talking to just now? I thought I heard a child’s voice.”
Jian Zhile paused. He had forgotten about that. He then honestly said, “I met a child last night. It seems he got separated from his family. It was raining heavily, so I brought him home for the night.”
Grandma sighed, “That poor child. What’s his name? How old is he?”
Jian Zhile replied honestly, “His name is An An. He looks about three or four years old.”
Grandma paused, as if sighing at something. She said, “Lele, what do you plan to do with the child?”
“I’m planning to take him to the police station after lunch.” Jian Zhile said, “His parents must be worried. I need to take him back.”
Grandma sighed, “Is the child okay?”
Jian Zhile reassured her, “He’s fine. You don’t need to worry. I’ll handle it. I’ll come visit you by the end of the year when I have time.”
Only then did Grandma agree.
After finishing the call, Jian Zhile sighed in relief, having made his plans. He turned around and saw the child standing at the door.
An An didn’t know when he had come to the door or how much he had heard. The young child’s eyes were red, filled with tears, and he looked at Jian Zhile with a lonely, small figure.
Jian Zhile felt inexplicably guilty, putting away his phone, “An An, you…”
“Daddy, are you going to leave An An?” The child’s tears fell like broken beads, his baby voice full of grievance and sadness, “An An doesn’t want to go to the police station, doesn’t want to be separated from Daddy!”
