Jian Zhile struggled to sit up, looking at the sky outside. The night was still dark, but the heavy rain had lessened significantly, leaving trickling trails on the glass. He felt relieved because, due to the holiday, he didn’t have to work tomorrow.
The small lamp by the bed was turned on, casting a warm yellow light.
Jian Zhile looked at the person beside him. The little boy was snuggled up next to him, sound asleep. Half of the boy’s fair face was buried in the pillow, the other half was exposed, showing a touch of red. His soft, plump cheeks resembled a small bun. The boy’s gentle breathing added some warmth to the room, which felt slightly cold due to the rain.
When Jian Zhile got up and pulled back the blanket, he felt dizzy, but he still made sure to cover the child well to prevent him from catching a cold.
He stepped into the living room, rummaging through drawers and cabinets.
Finally, Jian Zhile found the fever medicine in the innermost cabinet. He fetched a glass of water from the kitchen and swallowed the medicine haphazardly. Afraid of waking the child if he went back to the bedroom, he grabbed a blanket from the storage room and lay down on the sofa to sleep.
In his sleep, his head still felt hot and feverish.
In his daze, Jian Zhile suddenly felt a cool, comforting sensation on his forehead, as if it dispelled the heat, making him feel much more relaxed.
When he woke up, Jian Zhile thought he heard the sound of water.
Wait…
The sound of water?!
Jian Zhile abruptly opened his eyes and saw a small figure standing by the coffee table in the living room. The morning sunlight streamed through the glass, casting an almost surreal light on the child.
“Daddy, you’re awake…” The child, who was squeezing water out of a towel, had bright eyes. He toddled over with the wet towel and placed it on Jian Zhile’s forehead, softly saying, “Daddy, don’t move. An An will put the towel on you. The pain will fly away!”
Jian Zhile was stunned.
Looking at the water basin not far away, he raised his head to look at the child with rolled-up sleeves in disbelief. “Did you change the towel for me?”
An An nodded, his warm, moist eyes glistening. “Daddy, do you still feel bad?”
Jian Zhile felt much better, the worst being the fever last night that kept waking him up. He finally slept well when he felt the coolness. But he never dreamed that it was this child who took care of him!
“You…” Jian Zhile slowly sat up and asked, “How did you manage to carry the water basin?”
Hearing this, the child, like a little puppy waiting to be praised, walked to the coffee table, raised his small hand, and pointed to the bathroom door. “An An dragged it from there.”
Jian Zhile chuckled. “Dragged?”
He then noticed what seemed to be water traces on the floor.
Looking at those winding water traces, he could imagine the difficulty of the journey.
“Yes!” The child nodded his head. Demonstrating, he dragged the water basin on the floor with his small arms, panting lightly as he did so. After two drags, he looked at Jian Zhile with bright eyes. “Daddy, look, An An dragged it over like this…”
Watching the child struggling to drag the water basin with his small body, Jian Zhile suddenly felt a bit of a lump in his throat. Over the years, he had wandered alone, fighting through illnesses with no one to take care of him. He never imagined that one day, he would be treated so gently by a child.
Slowly getting up from the sofa,
Jian Zhile walked over and pulled the child up, asking, “What did you just say your name was?”
The child’s hand in his was somewhat cold. Jian Zhile saw him obediently standing in front of him, his baby voice soft and innocent, “An An.”
Jian Zhile unconsciously repeated, “An An…”
Such a cute name.
Safe and sound, a very good meaning. If it were his own child, he would definitely name them like this too. As a parent, one doesn’t ask for much, just that the child grows up safe and sound.
Just then,
A gentle sneeze sounded.
Jian Zhile immediately came back to his senses, seeing the child dressed thinly in front of him. He became serious and quickly asked, “An An, when did you wake up?”
An An looked at Jian Zhile’s expression and seemed a bit nervous. He spoke cautiously, “I woke up in the middle of the night. Daddy wasn’t by my side, so I came out. I saw Daddy feeling very bad, so I went to find a towel…”
As he spoke,
The child might have been afraid Jian Zhile would be upset. His eyes slowly turned red, and he said cautiously, “Daddy, An An didn’t run around. I waited obediently for Daddy to wake up…”
Jian Zhile’s heart skipped a beat, remembering last night’s instructions for the child not to run around. His heart ached inexplicably, and he quickly wiped the child’s tears. “An An, don’t cry. I’m not blaming you. I’m just worried you woke up too early and didn’t sleep well.”
Children are really easy to comfort. After a few soft words from Jian Zhile, the crying slowly stopped. The child’s little face was red from crying, and he couldn’t stop hiccupping from the tears.
Jian Zhile felt both heartache and guilt. He picked the child up and said, “Are you sleepy? I’ll take you back to sleep a bit more, okay?”
An An buried himself in Jian Zhile’s embrace, his small hand tightly clutching his clothes, his baby voice tearful, “Daddy, stay…”
How could Jian Zhile refuse? Fortunately, the fever wasn’t contagious. He softened his voice, “Okay, Daddy will stay with you.”
Wait…
Why did it feel so natural to really be a daddy?
Jian Zhile walked to the bed, put the child under the blanket, and saw An An’s eyes still filled with attachment. With a silent sigh, he patted the child’s back and softly said, “Sleep, I won’t leave. I’ll stay here with you.”
Only then did An An feel at ease, his eyebrows relaxing. In no time, he fell into a deep sleep.
Watching the sleeping child, Jian Zhile sighed softly. Well, he would just pretend to be his daddy and take care of him for a while. After all, it wouldn’t be for long; he would go to the police station in the afternoon.
